House Managers and Drama teachers- stick to your guns on the no camera rule. When they say "I pay your salary", simply reply "I'm protecting the safety of the students and ensuring them an actor and audience friendly environment." If you want you can train your ushers to say that or you can come up with slightly wittier.
This however does not solve the underlying problem of parents wanting pictures their child on stage. What you should do (if you don't already) is schedule a photo call and make sure there are plenty of pictures of every actor. At the end of the production you can give away a CD of all of the production shots or charge a small fee for them as a fund raiser. They will be better then anything that mom and dad can take from the middle of the house and hopefully will not involve flash photography (which tends to piss off lighting designers). Photo calls take more work but if handled properly will go quite quickly. They must be put on the rehearsal calendar at the beginning of the audition process. If parents know in advance that they will have pictures they will be less inclined to act like children when you tell them they can't take any of their own.
Photo Call Tips:
1. Get the best photographer you can. If you have to go with a student or volunteer look at some of their work before you agree to use them. Tell them you need the stage lighting to come through and not be washed out. Make sure you get shots of the set as well as the actors.
2. Digital = Cheap! Film is expensive to use and you can't see instant results. Use a digital camera and check every shot before moving on to the next one. Although digital is cheap to process, you still should go with the highest resolution camera you can get.
3. Work from the end of the show to the beginning. If you start the call after a dress rehearsal or a performance you can reset back to the beginning as you progress through the call.
4. You can allow parents to attend the photo call and let them take pictures. Just make sure your photographer has the shots you want before moving on.
5. Have your shots in mind before hand. Write them out and post copies of what shots will be used in dressing rooms and your call board. Stick to the shots you selected and don't add anymore. No one wants to stay any longer then necessary.
6. Remind everyone frequently about them. That includes the crew who will need to reset the lighting, costumes and sets as the photo call progresses.

Isn't lovely when people have no clue that the theatre experience isn't all about them....and would have the balls to tell you that they pay your salery....WOW! I used to be a professional house manager and what we did was had the usual signs including an annoucnement right before the show that reminded the audience that flash photography was not only prohibited but a danger to cast members and that the House Manager had the right confiscate any cameras......then if someone did take flash pics anyway I would pull them aside and tell them that they had two choices....they could give me the camera and get it after the show or I could just take all of the film out of it right there......they usually gave me the camera. :) People need to learn theatre etiquette which in this day and age is a lost art. -Greta Rothman >From: "Pribble Carol" <cpribble at us.edu> >To: <VanBrujah at aol.com>,

everyone<SPAN> </SPAN>EXCEPT<SPAN> </SPAN>>them.<SPAN> </SPAN>><SPAN> </SPAN>><SPAN> </SPAN>>We also have a small group of parents who<SPAN> </SPAN>- even though their<SPAN> </SPAN>children<SPAN> </SPAN>>have been involved in community and high school theatre for years, and<SPAN> </SPAN>they<SPAN> </SPAN>>know better - continue to sneak cameras into performances and shoot<SPAN> </SPAN>flash<SPAN> </SPAN>>pictures during them, despite signs and an announcement telling them<SPAN> </SPAN>this<SPAN> </SPAN>>is not permitted. Their new thing is to sit in the 5th or 6th row,<SPAN> </SPAN>dead<SPAN> </SPAN>>center, where they think we won't be able to get to them and tell them<SPAN> </SPAN>to<SPAN> </SPAN>>stop. We actually had to interrupt a performance 2 weeks
ago and tell<SPAN> </SPAN>them<SPAN> </SPAN>>to stop. One parent actually walked past me with a camera bag, and<SPAN> </SPAN>when I<SPAN> </SPAN>>reminded her that she could not take pictures, she insisted that it<SPAN> </SPAN>was for<SPAN> </SPAN>>after the show, and she didn't want to leave it in her car. Of course,<SPAN> </SPAN>as<SPAN> </SPAN>>soon as the lights went down, out came her camera and the flashes<SPAN> </SPAN>began.<SPAN> </SPAN>><SPAN> </SPAN>>So here's a good question for all you HS Drama folks out there - What<SPAN> </SPAN>do<SPAN> </SPAN>>YOU do when this happens? How far do you press the issue with people<SPAN> </SPAN>who<SPAN> </SPAN>>don't mind reminding you that "as a taxpayer, I pay your salary?"<SPAN> </SPAN>><SPAN> </SPAN>>I'm curious to
