Karamu House presents The Trial Of One-Short Sighted Black  Woman vs. Mammy
Louise And Safreeta Mae  during March Women's Month Celebration   (Comedy
Satire)  by Karani Marcia Leslie and A Forum and Discussion on Racial
Stereotyping in American Entertainment.  

 

The Trial..,  Directed by Tony  Sias, puts racial stereotypes on
trial-literally!  A young professional African American files a law suit
against two negative images of Black women: Mammy and the sexually
licentious, Safreeta Mae. The courtroom satire uses humor and history to get
to the truth of the images African Americans face daily.    

 (Contains Adult Themes   Parental Guidance Suggested).

The Trial.., will be presented in Karamu's Jelliffe  Theatre  March 2 -
March 25, 2007 with Preview "Director" Nights on Wednesday, February 28th &
Thursday, March1st

Scholar Caroline Jackson Smith, faculty member at Oberlin College, presents
observations about blackface and other forms of racial stereotyping that
seeped into American popular culture.  Professor Jackson Smith will be
joined in a panel discussion by Karamu House artistic director Terrence
Spivey, JCC theater producer Fred Sternfeld, and Karamu guest director Tony
Sias. Included in the program are scenes from the Karamu production of The
Trial of One Short-Sighted Black Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae and
songs from the JCC's production of Jolson & Company.  Attendees will receive
special ticket offers to both productions
