  Synopsis
Little Women is a coming-of-age story about the young March sisters =97 =20=

Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy, with Jo at its heart. The opera begins with a =20=

view of the past, when life for Jo was simple and she and her sisters =20=

were close. Much to her dismay, life becomes complicated. Meg, the =20
eldest, marries. Younger sister Beth grows ill. Fearful of putting =20
love or her own ambitions before her devotion to her sisters, Jo =20
pushes away two would-be suitors, driving one into the arms of her =20
youngest sister, Amy, and soon finds herself alone. Realizing that =20
nothing she does can stop the world from changing, Jo begins to =20
accept that she must let go of the past, celebrate her loved ones for =20=

what and who they were, and release them to what they are now.

Mark Adamo achieved national recognition when Little Women, his first =20=

opera, was broadcast in August of 2001 on PBS=92s Great Performances, a =20=

mere three years after its 1998 premiere at the Houston Grand Opera. =20
Such high-profile attention for an essentially unknown composer is =20
unprecedented, and was followed by the commercial release of Little =20
Women on a double-CD set for the Ondine label. Adamo=92s first opera =20
had quickly become one of the most successful operas by a modern =20
American composer and a repertoire staple: more than 40 productions =20
of his retelling of the Louisa May Alcott classic have been presented =20=

by opera companies great and small. In 2005 the New York City Opera =20
(NYCO), where Adamo is composer-in-residence, took the piece on tour =20
to Japan (the ensemble=92s debut) as part of the World Expo. Adamo =20
curates the NYCO=92s contemporary opera workshop series =93VOX: =20
Showcasing American Composers.=94 In March 2005, the Houston Grand =20
Opera premiered his second opera, Lysistrata, or The Nude Goddess, =20
and the National Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to premiere his harp =20=

concerto Four Angels in June 2007. Adamo=92s choral works have been =20
widely performed and include Garland, written for the Young People=92s =20=

Chorus of New York; The Poet Speaks of Praising, for men=92s chorus and =20=

piano, commissioned by the GALA V festival; Pied Beauty, for =20
unaccompanied chorus, commissioned by the Washington Singers; Three =20
Appalachian Folk Tunes for soprano and unaccompanied chorus, =20
commissioned by the Congressional Chorus of the United States; No. 10/=20=

Supreme Virtue for double chorus (on verses from the Tao Te Ching); =20
and QWERTYUIOP, for chorus and mad soprano (a Dadaist comedy on =20
typewriter lessons). He wrote Canticle for the superstar vocal =20
ensemble Chanticleer and Cantate Domino for the Choral Arts Society =20
of Washington. Adamo began his education at New York University, =20
where he received the Paulette Goddard Remarque Scholarship for =20
outstanding undergraduate achievement in playwriting. He went on to =20
earn a bachelor of music degree cum laude in composition in 1990 at =20
the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he was =20
awarded the Theodore Presser prize for outstanding undergraduate =20
achievement in composition. Adamo served as Master Artist at the =20
Atlantic Center for the Arts in May 2003 and has annotated programs =20
for Stagebill, the Freer Gallery of Art, and most recently for BMG =20
Classics. His criticism and interviews have appeared in the =20
Washington Post, Stagebill, Opera News, the Star-Ledger, and the New =20
Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
Christopher Larkin is a regular guest of opera companies throughout =20=

North America. He has appeared on the podiums of the Santa Fe, =20
Washington, New York City, Fort Worth, Portland, and Nashville =20
operas, as well as the Houston Grand Opera, Opera Pacific, Boston =20
Lyric Opera, and Lake George Opera. He has conducted an expansive =20
repertoire, including the East Coast premiere of Todd Machover=92s =20
Resurrection, La Boheme, La Traviata, Samson et Dalila, I Puritani, =20
Don Giovanni, Tosca, Romeo et Juliette, Le Nozze di Figaro, and the =20
Fort Worth Opera=92s performance of Little Women. As Music Director of =20=

the New York City Opera National Company, he led national tours of =20
Madama Butterfly and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Prior to coming to New =20=

York, he held the position of Associate Conductor with Houston Grand =20
Opera. While in Houston, he led the world premieres of Little Women =20
and Michael Daugherty=92s Jackie O with the Houston Opera Studio, and =20=

also conducted the highly acclaimed multimedia productions of Carmen, =20=

Madama Butterfly, and I Pagliacci. Maestro Larkin has worked as an =20
assistant conductor and vocal coach with several major opera =20
companies in North America, including the Metropolitan, San =20
Francisco, and Vancouver operas, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, =20
and the Canadian Opera Company. Last season, Larkin made his debut at =20=

the Wexford Festival conducting Floyd=92s Susannah, and returned to the =20=

Fort Worth Opera for Dialogues of the Carmelites, the Utah Opera for =20
Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Opera Carolina for La Cenerentola, and Il =20
Viaggio a Reims for the Music Academy of the West. This season, he =20
will make his Florentine Opera debut with Il Barbiere di Siviglia, =20
and he will return to the Fort Worth Opera for Falstaff and to the =20
Music Academy of the West for La Boheme. The following season =20
already includes engagements with Portland Opera for La Cenerentola, =20
Kentucky Opera for Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Fort Worth Opera =20
for Angels in America.

Jonathon Field is one of America=92s more versatile and popular stage =20=

directors, having directed more than 100 productions in all four =20
corners of the United States. He served as Artistic Director of Lyric =20=

Opera Cleveland for six seasons, where he presented the operas of =20
Mozart, Rossini, and Donizetti as well as the Ohio premieres of works =20=

by John Adams, Mark Adamo, and Philip Glass. Field=92s productions for =20=

the Lyric Opera of Chicago, among them Trouble in Tahiti, Gianni =20
Schicchi, The Old Maid and the Thief and The Spanish Hour, were so =20
successful they were repeated at the Illinois Humanities Festival =20
with Stephen Sondheim as keynote speaker. His productions of La =20
Cenerentola and Die Fledermaus for San Francisco Opera=92s Western =20
Opera Theatre played in more than 20 states, as has an updated =20
version of La Boh=E8me for Seattle Opera. In addition to the standard =20=

Italian and German repertoire, he has directed Eugene Onegin and =20
Boris Godunov in the original Russian in San Francisco; he had a =20
great critical success there as well with Prokofiev=92s The Love for =20
Three Oranges. Over the past eight years Field has directed 10 =20
productions with the Arizona Opera, being deemed by the press =93their =20=

most perceptive stage director,=94 and working there with such esteemed =20=

artists as Teresa Zylis-Gara, Jerome Hines, Pablo Elvira, Giorgio =20
Tozzi, and Angelina Reux.

Field=92s versatility extends from the avant garde to musical comedies. =20=

He successfully introduced computer-generated scenery to the world of =20=

opera in a recent San Francisco production of Candide that the press =20
called =93virtual Voltaire=97the backgrounds are as varied as the =
story.=94 =20
His pioneering use of video-projected scenery in productions of The =20
Turn of the Screw, Tales of Hoffmann, and Der Freisch=FCtz has elicited =20=

praise from audience and critics alike. In the realm of operetta and =20
musicals he has staged H.M.S. Pinafore for Opera Omaha, Trial by Jury =20=

for Lake George Opera, Bernstein=92s Wonderful Town in Chicago, and =20
Merry Widow and Countess Maritza in San Francisco. For the Oakland =20
Symphony he translated and choreographed Stravinsky=92s Pulcinella =20
using members of the Oakland Ballet. He has worked on several world =20
premieres, most notably assisting Robert Altman with Bolcom=92s =20
McTeague at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and David Alden with Susa=92s =20
The Love of Don Perlimplin with San Francisco Opera. He has also =20
worked as Assistant Director for several of Seattle Opera=92s Wagner =20
Ring cycles, and he has served in an administrative capacity with =20
many opera companies and festivals. In February 2007, Field directed=97=20=

at Oberlin and at Miller Theatre in New York City=97the U.S. premiere =20=

of Lost Highway, the dramatic music theater work by noted Austrian =20
composer Olga Neuwirth based on the David Lynch film.
