KARAMU THEATRICAL EVENTS FOR MARCH

              I. Karamu House presents The Trial Of One-Short Sighted
Black Woman vs. Mammy Louise And Safreeta Mae during Women's Month
Celebration (Comedy Satire) by Karani Marcia Leslie. The Trial..,
Directed by Tony Sias, will be presented in Karamu's Jelliffe Theatre
March 2 - March 25, 2007

For nearly 100 years Hollywood has controlled the way you see Black women
that forced the American society to view women of African descent in a
certain light. This play with the long title and its bristling political
satire puts racial stereotypes on trial-literally! A young professional
African American files a law suit against two negative images of Black
women: Mammy and the sexually licentious, Safreeta Mae. The courtroom satire
uses humor and history to get to the truth of the images African Americans
face daily. (Contains Adult Themes Parental Guidance Suggested).

Performances: Thursday through Saturday at 8:00 pm; Sunday at 3:00 pm
Regular Ticket Prices: Thursday and Sunday $18.00; Friday and Saturday
$21.00

            II. GOLDILOCKS ON TRIAL

by Ed Monk

Director Richard H. Morris, Jr.

March 10 - April 1, 2007 (Arena Theatre)

Back by popular demand, Goldilocks is back on trial again. For those who
missed the verdict last season due to sell outs, this is your chance to come
and be a witness. Goldilocks is on trial for breaking and entering. Will she
be found guilty and sent to prison, or will the truth come out? It's up to
Judge Wallabee and some very silly jurors to decide after hearing testimony
from Goldee, the bickering Three Bears, and surprise witness Merwin the Big
Bad Wolf, among others. (Family Friendly For All Ages)

Saturday & Sunday Only @ 2:00 PM Youth $6.00; Adults $8.00

III. Racial Stereotyping in American Entertainment: A Forum
and Discussion (FREE)

Sunday, March 11, 2007 1:00 - 2:30 PM Karamu House, Inc. Jelliffe Theatre

Scholar Caroline Jackson Smith, faculty member at Oberlin College, presents
observations about blackface and other forms of racial stereotyping that
seeped into American popular culture. Professor Jackson Smith will be
joined in a panel discussion by Karamu House artistic director Terrence
Spivey, JCC theater producer Fred Sternfeld, and Karamu guest director Tony
Sias. Included in the program are scenes from the Karamu production of The
Trial of One Short-Sighted Black Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae and
songs from the JCC's production of Jolson & Company. Patrons will receive
special ticket offers to both productions

IV. Karamu Presents a staged reading of A HOUSE WITH NO WALLS
by Thomas Gibbons directed by Terrence Spivey Saturday, March 17h @ 4pm
-FREE

Off the heels of the critically acclaimed Permanent Collection, Karamu will
hold a special staged reading of award winning playwright Thomas Gibbons
latest work, A House With No Walls on Saturday, March 17h @ 4pm with a
multiracial cast. Gibbons is also the writer of bee-luther-hatchee which
also had critical acclaim at Karamu two years ago. A House With No Walls
recently premiered in regional theatres this season completes the
playwright's "race trilogy." A full production is slated for Karamu's
2007/08 season.

Philadelphia is a city with a long history of racial tension, one whose
roots lie in the very foundations of American democracy. In 2002, when it
was publicly revealed that the new Liberty Bell Center was to be built on
the foundations of George Washington's home, (with its entrance lying right
over the site where his slave quarters had once stood) this history took on
newly symbolic proportions. Celebration of the Liberty Bell, a symbol of
revolutionary freedom and an emblem of the abolitionist cause, was
threatening to mask the more painful reality of slavery.

In A House With No Walls, playwright Thomas Gibbons uses this debate as a
springboard for the exploration of a larger conflict, one which the play's
dramatic narrative will seek to explore (if not entirely resolve). The
conflict takes place between two characters, both African-American, who are
brought together by the Liberty Bell controversy. Cadence Lane is a
successful academic with a new, staunchly conservative book on the shelves.
Salif Camara is an ultra liberal, afro-centric political activist. Their
story is interwoven with that of one of Washington's slaves, Oney Judge, as
she tries to decide whether to risk the escape to freedom. As the play
unfolds, the slave quarters and the Liberty Museum become the symbolic
ground for a much larger debate.

Patrons will receive a special discount on tickets for Sunday afternoon
March 18th 3:00 PM performance of The Trial of One Short Sighted Black
Woman vs. Mammy Louise and Safreeta Mae directed by Tony Sias.

Come to Karamu and Feel at Home In the House, Karamu House is the oldest
African American Cultural Arts Institution in the United States. These
productions are sponsored in part by The Cleveland Foundation.
