Lakewood, Ohio - INSIDE World Music and the Beck Center for the Arts
continue their 2006-2007 concert series with Barynya [bah-rin-yah], in
two performances of traditional Russian music on Saturday, April 14 and
Sunday, April 15.  The Saturday concert begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Beck
Center Armory and will be followed by a Russian style vecherinka - a
dance party with live music, dancing and Russian style refreshments.
The Sunday concert begins at 2:00 p.m. on the Beck Center's Main Stage.=20

A group of all-star performers from Russia, Barynya brings the
traditional music of Russia to the stage with its vital spirit, humor
and raw, passionate energy intact.  The ensemble's director, Mikhail
Smirnov "Misha", who trained at the Moscow State Academy of Culture and
Arts and has performed as a soloist for the Moscow State Center for
Russian Song, is also a self-taught player of the garmoshka, the small
button accordion used in Russian folk music.  While a student in Moscow,
Smirnov traveled extensively from village to village collecting and
learning traditional folk music which he has incorporated into Barynya's
repertoire.  Joining Smirnov are balalaika virtuoso, Alex Siniavski,
former soloist with the Andreyev State Balalaika Ensemble; contrabass
balalaika player, Leonid Bruk; and singers, Valentina Kvasova and
Victoria Pichurova.  The group's program includes Russian, Gypsy,
Cossack, and Ukrainian songs as well as virtuoso instrumental pieces.
Drawing from these rich sources, Barynya produces a varied and
breathtaking concert.  Don't miss this unforgettable performance!
