As part of Case Western Reserve University's fifth annual Research
ShowCASE, playwright, actress and MacArthur Foundation Fellow Anna
Deavere Smith will serve as a guest speaker at a forum called "Race and
the Nation - Snapshots of America in Change." The educational forum will
begin with a theatrical presentation of voices from America by Smith in
which she transforms herself onstage into characters that explore issues
of race, community and character in America. Through Smith's unique
interpretation, the characters express their own points of view on
controversial issues. Experts will then lead a panel discussion on the
increasing complexity of American race relations. Dee Perry, Ideastream
Around Noon host and host of Applause, WVIZ/PBS' half-hour weekly arts
and culture television series, will moderate the discussion.

=20

The discussion takes place Thursday, April 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 12
p.m. in Veale Convocation Center's Horsburgh Gym as part of the
university's Research ShowCASE. A free event open to the public,
Research ShowCASE highlights research taking place at Case and its
collaborating institutions with the goal of forging partnerships that
will raise our region's economic growth.

=20

In America, race relations have become increasingly complex,
particularly in the medical field. Concern over persistent disparity in
the health-care systems, where inclusion and exclusion criteria affect
access to quality health care, is a part of our nation's fabric. With
the June 2005 approval of Bidil by the FDA, the role of genetic
variation mandates research in all identifiably distinct "racial
groups." Are we bridging the gap, or making it wider?=20
