About The Play...
When Cleveland-area natives Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee's /Inherit
The Wind /debuted in 1955,/ /only 30 years had passed since the famous
'Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes' trial on which it was based. 52 years
later, the evolution vs. creation battle depicted in the play is still
very much at the forefront of public debate. Chagrin Valley Little
Theatre, which was founded only a few years after the "Scopes Monkey"
case was tried, prepares to mount its production of the play beginning
March 16th, and running Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00 PM through
April 7th.
The original trial began as a challenge to the Butler Act, which stated
that any deviance from the Bible equated to a disrespect for American
law, and prohibited the teaching of evolution in Tennessee public
schools. The ACLU, in conjunction with Tennessee businessman George
Rappleyea, hired a young substitute teacher named John Scopes to teach
evolution in a Dayton, TN classroom, provoking the town constable to
make an arrest.
The trial itself was a media circus, covered most notably by the
Baltimore Sun's H.L. Mencken, and involving prominent lawyers William
Jennings Bryan for the prosecution and Clarence Darrow for the defence.
Although Scopes was convicted of the charges, Darrow and Scopes won the
moral victory, and the teacher was eventually acquitted on a
technicality by the court of appeals. Bryan died in his sleep five days
after the trial was concluded.
/Inherit The Wind/ centers on schoolteacher Bert Cates (Kenny Fadeley)
and his lawyer Henry Drummond (Gene Wagner) fighting the bombastic
Matthew Brady (John Thobaben), all under the watch of the writer E.K.
Hornbeck (Don Bernardo). Complicating matters is the young teacher's
relation ship with Rachel Brown (Grace Culbertson), who is the daughter
of the town's conservative preacher (David Rohler). Inherit The Wind
has been adapted several times for film and television, with the
1960 film version garnering several Oscar nominations with Spencer Tracy
as Drummond and Frederic March as Brady, and the 1999 television winning
Emmy and Golden Globe awards for Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott. The
play is currently being revived in New York with Brian Dennehy and
Christopher Plummer in the leading roles.
