OBERLIN, OHIO (April 3, 2007)=E2=80=94Tenor Alek Shrader, a master=E2=80=99=

degree student in opera theater at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, =20=

is one of six young singers to win the Metropolitan Opera=E2=80=99s 2007 =

National Council Auditions and with it, a $15,000 cash prize. He was =20
selected from 11 finalists who performed arias with the Met =20
Orchestra, conducted by Marco Armiliato, at the Grand Finals Concert, =20=

held at the Met on April 1. Shrader performed =E2=80=9CIl mio tesoro =20
intanto=E2=80=9D from Mozart=E2=80=99s Don Giovanni and =E2=80=9CAh! mes =
amis=E2=80=9D from =20
Donizetti=E2=80=99s La Fille Du Regiment.

The Grand Finals Concert was recorded for broadcast at a later date =20
on public radio stations across the United States. Check local =20

A student of Associate Professor of Singing Salvatore Champagne, =20
Shrader is the third Oberlin-trained singer in the last six years to =20
win the prestigious Met competition. Soprano Alyson Cambridge =E2=80=9902 =
=20
won in 2003; soprano Carolyn Betty =E2=80=9999 won in 2002.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Shrader, 25, is expected to receive both a =20
bachelor=E2=80=99s degree in vocal performance and a master=E2=80=99s =
degree in =20
opera theater from Oberlin in May 2007. He began his Oberlin studies =20
with Emeritus Professor of Singing Richard Miller, and last October =20
participated in a master class with Distinguished Professor of Voice =20
Marilyn Horne. His recent Oberlin roles include Nemorino in L=E2=80=99Elis=
ir =20
d=E2=80=99Amore, Fenton in Merry Wives of Windsor, the Chevalier in =20
Dialogues des Carm=C3=A8lites, and Tony in West Side Story.

Shrader made his professional debut last summer as Count Almaviva in =20
Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and last =20
January sang Florville in Rossini=E2=80=99s Il Signor Bruschino with New =

The Met Opera made its selection of 11 finalists from nearly 1,500 =20
singers who participated in the auditions held in 45 districts and 15 =20=

regions throughout the United States and Canada, sponsored by the =20
Metropolitan Opera National Council. Given the reach of the =20
auditions, the number of applicants, and the long tradition =20
associated with them, the Metropolitan Opera National Council =20
Auditions are considered the most prestigious in North America for =20
singers seeking to launch an operatic career. Some winners are =20
invited to join the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist =20
Development Program.

  Past winners of the Met auditions include many of today=E2=80=99s =
leading =20
operatic artists such as Ren=C3=A9e Fleming, Hei-Kyung Hong, Deborah =20
Voigt, Grace Bumbry, Susan Graham, Dolora Zajick, Nathan Gunn, Ben =20
