            GANDALF MURPHY
and the SLAMBOVIAN
CIRCUS OF DREAMS
  Friday, April 6
8:00 PM
In 1998 The Circus emerged from the misty hills of Sleepy Hollow, New York and exploded upon the Hudson Valley music scene with their stunning self-produced debut release, "A Good Thief Tips His Hat". The quirky quartet then began touring throughout the northeast and rapidly developed a fiercely loyal, all-ages following. Featured recently in Relix Magazine, the New York Times and on the CBS hit show, Joan of Arcadia, the band's charismatic live performances and whimsical blend of folk, rock, hillbilly and pop have simply captivated audiences and critics alike.
Their much celebrated new release "Flapjacks from the Sky" has garnered high praise from music writers, sparked generous activity at radio, and continues to invoke wave after wave of enthusiastic response from music fans world-wide. The music of Slambovia has been described as "Hillbilly-Floyd, folk-pop", "alt-country roots-rock, and "surreal Americana". Yet as earthy as their music seems, The Circus has a spiritual side - "Talkin' to the Buddha," "Call to the Mystic," "Living with God," "Flapjacks from the Sky". Dancing freely between existing religious and philosophical mythologies, their music is not only uplifting and empowering but fun, a lot of fun. As Woody Guthrie said: "It's not enough for a song to be good, it must be good for something." Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus of Dreams ... Their music can "Heal what ails ya!
"They're not just a band. That's something like saying the Bible is just a book." - Westchester County Weekly

        MAIA SHARP
  Thursday, April 12
8:00 PM

  Maia Sharp
Being the child of country songwriter Randy Sharp (he's written hits for Clay Walker, Patty Loveless, and others) and growing up in the San Fernando Valley in the '70s had to have given Maia Sharp a leg up on her way to a musical career. That was the era of Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, and Rickie Lee Jones and music was in the Southern California air. By age 12, Sharp was noodling around on the piano, saxophone, oboe, and guitar. Fast forward to her early twenties, and she could be found on-stage at one of L.A.'s many acoustic venues performing her own jazz/folk songs to an engaged throng of fans. When not on-stage, Sharp could surely be found collaborating with artists such as Carole King, Jules Shear, Lisa Loeb, and Jonatha Brooke. It was Sharp's songwriting that won the attention of manager Miles Copeland, who signed her to his new Ark 21 label and released her debut album, Hardly Glamour, in 1997. That year, Sharp was nominated for Triple-A radio's Artist of the Year.
She also shared the stage with Bruce Cockburn, Vonda Shepard, and David Wilcox, among others. As a songwriter, Sharp has had tunes recorded by Cher, Kim Richey, Amanda Marshall, and Paul Carrack. Hardly Glamour's "Parting Request" was also included on the soundtrack for The Mighty. In 1998, Sharp recorded her follow-up album, Tinderbox, and released it independently after parting ways with her label. The new millennium saw her teaming with Art Garfunkel and Buddy Mondlock, and getting a track on the highly acclaimed debut from Shivaree. Spring 2002 brought her back to the forefront with a second album. She hit the road with Keb Mo and Jonny Lang and issued her self-titled debut for Concord. Ñ Kelly McCartney, All Music Guide

        CHRIS HILLMAN
featuring
HERB PEDERSEN
  Friday, April 13
8:00 PM
Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen played together in the Desert Rose Band, while the former, of course, was a key figure in the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Here, the two country-rock pioneers explore the back roads of American folk with a collection of songs that reflect the depth and vitality of their skills. Beneath the backdrop of soaring vocal harmonies (Pedersen's tenor has graced albums by Vince Gill, Johnny Rivers and Linda Rondstadt), instrumental sides of the two players emerge. Hillman's excellent guitar and mandolin stylings blend beautifully with the hillbilly flavors provided by Pedersen's fiery banjo picking as the two roam through everything from honky-tonk shuffles and dance-hall waltzes to slammin' road house grooves that sound like the Burrito Bros. 2002. Backed by killer band that includes Larry Park and Jay Dee Maness respectively on lead and pedal-steel guitars, the Hillman/Pedersen team take us on a journey of the coolest vistas in country
music. A modern album that has "classic" written all over it! Hillman and Pedersen met in 1963 at the Troubadour, the legendary L.A. club, when they were aspiring 18- year-old folk and bluegrass musicians. Hillman became a founding member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and went on to join Stephen Stills in Manassas. After 40 years together, their harmony is so tight that it's almost as if they were singing in one clear, tenor voice.
Any decent list of rock 'n' roll's unsung heroes had better contain Chris Hillman. There's simply no room for negotiation. A charter member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, along with stellar, lower magnitude outfits such as Manassas (with Stephen Stills), Souther- Hillman-Furay, McGuinn-Clark-Hiliman and the Desert Rose Band, the native Southern Californian has been around the block and back.
This is where another unjustly obscure singer 'n' picker of distinction enters the picture. Herb Pedersen, then a teenaged member of another fledgling bluegrass unit, the Pine Valley Boys, met an equally wet-behind-the-ears Hillman on hoot night at L.A.'s Troubadour in 1963. The pair forged a musical bond and friendship that thrives to this day. While Hillman blazed his trail across the frontier of country rock, Pedersen established himself as a versatile sideman (guitar, dobro, banjo, etc.) and harmony singer nonpareil with Linda Ronstadt, Vince Gill, David Grisman, James Taylor and countless others. Pedersen's dance card also lists a full-time gig in the '70s with the Burrito-flavored Dillards, and current service with the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, arguably California's finest contemporary bluegrass act. In the 1980s, he and Hillman hooked up in the Desert Rose Band and cranked out a string of mainstream country hits.
The old amigos recently connected again to record Way Out West (Back Porch), a rollicking collection of California-style country and Appalachian breakdowns.

An Acoustic Evening with Bo Bice
Special Guest: Gary Nichols
Husky-voiced American Idol singing sensation Harold "Bo" Bice hailed from Helena, AL, and brought his Southern sensibility with him to the fourth season of Fox's long-running talent contest. Bice competed weekly against fellow rocker Constantine Maroulis, his long hair, bell bottoms, and drug rug tunics against Maroulis' biker jacket and stockpile of New York City swagger. Eventually Bice won out (to the shock of some Idol fans), and went all the way to the winner's circle where he was AI runner-up to corn silk Oklahoman Carrie Underwood.

Gary Nichols may be country music's new "guitar slinger," but don't mistake him for a "tenderfoot" or a "greenhorn."
The hotshot instrumentalist, singing wonder and songwriting champ fits the classic definition of a "guitar slinger," but he's no novice. This is a role he was born to play.
