  For Immediate Release

Gary Webster, Emerging Playwright, Gets Triple Exposure:
on the Stage, on the Small Screen, and on the Web

Clevelanders will get a chance to experience three romantic comedies by Gary Webster, which take different looks at marriage, wedding rings, and lots of “’splaining to do,” when romance goes awry, during “PlayActs” Performances, a two-day celebration held Saturday, April 28, 7:30 P and Sunday, April 29, 3:00 P, at Gallery 324 in the Galleria, East Ninth and St. Clair.
The event will showcase two short plays, You’ll be Back, a tale told by two wedding rings, and Prime Beef, where Diane has a great idea to auction off her boyfriend Jeff and his friend Eddie at the upcoming benefit for the local animal shelter, and Strictly Platonic? a special staged reading of this full-length play, where, almost as a dare, Paul and Emily end up sharing an apartment in Florida as roommates. Paul’s chances for his dream job are affected by this arrangement, which leads to a series of schemes and results in an unanticipated outcome for Paul and Emily. This two-act production will receive its full performance, summer, 2007, as part of an on-going “PlayActs” Performance series being presented to help support the Studio’s “New Life, New Image” public speaking community service project which it is piloting with New Life Community, a family transitional housing program.
WAKE UP And LIVE’s Actors’ Studio aims to present and promote Webster’s, and other area playwrights,’ works that illustrate the diversity of arts and performing artists in Northeast Ohio. Studio director Sue Johnson said Webster’s plays were chosen because they help exemplify the organization’s mission. Besides, they’re fun and they take a light-hearted look at the foibles of love and marriage.
“Webster is a prolific playwright, who has penned over three hundred scenes, sketches, one- and two-act plays. We wanted to select some of Webster’s representative plays which have substantive roles for women and reflect diversity of age, race, and also, because Cleveland needs to know about our own in-house version of Neil Simon,” Johnson said.
Webster began submitting his works, several years ago to the Studio, which conducts a playwriting competition once or twice each year, and considers all submission regardless of the writer’s experience. Johnson believes it’s time for Webster’s work to receive a special showcase and be introduced to Cleveland audiences.
Viewers can see Webster share insights about his work and his craft on video streaming excerpts of “Wake Up and Live with the Arts,” on the WAKE UP And LIVE’s Actors’ Studio web site, go to www.wakeupandlives.org, the spinning film reel. The cable show, now in its third year has featured more than one hundred arts-related guests from Northeast Ohio, Florida, Los Angeles, Canada and New York, and can be seen on Saturdays, 5:30 – 6:30 P on Time Warner, Cable channel 21 in the eastern suburbs, and on Time Warner, channel 23 in the western suburbs; Cox Cable, Fridays, 9:30 - 10:30 P, ch. 45; and Cleveland Cable Access, Mondays, 7:00 - 8:00 P, ch. 46.

Gary Webster has been writing plays since he was in high school. The first he can remember was written in eleventh grade. It was titled "This Wasn't What I Had in Mind," and the topic was...surprise...RELATIONSHIPS! Webster followed that up with parodies of several Shakespearian plays. He wrote stuff long before that, but those are the first plays he can recall. He has been the ‘token Gentile’ in Ruby Fox’s writing group for years. His formal playwright's training came via Bob Noll's class at the Cleveland Playhouse. Webster is currently a radio announcer, who is making his directorial debut with Confessions of a Saturday Afternoon, which will be performed at Cleveland Public Theater in May.

Sue Johnson is an actor, director, producer and talent coach whose professional credits include recent appearances in Cleveland area theatres, including Agents and Assets, an LAPD production at Cleveland Public Theater. She has directed My Big Fat Dysfunctional Office, a commissioned play, numerous "PlayActs" Performances, staged readings for Jim Spriggs' Terror on Biddle Street (2005), and Faye Sholiton’s All Things Being Equal (2006) for Karamu's Arenafest. TV credits include A & E's 100 Centre Street, and films, Antwone Fisher directed by Denzel Washington, and The Year That Trembled, Jay Craven, Director. Her talent resume lists numerous TV commercials, industrials, and voiceovers.

Johnson produces, directs and co-hosts WAKE UP And LIVE with the ARTS TV show, with
Chris Fortunato & Mac Michael, which showcases and celebrates the diversity of the performing arts, artists, and cultural arts in northeast Ohio. The performing & cultural arts program airs on Time Warner, Saturdays, 5:30 – 6:30 P, Cable, ch. 21, eastern suburbs and ch. 23, western suburbs, on Cox Cable, Fridays, 9:30 – 10:30 P, ch. 45 & Cleveland Access, Mondays, 7:00 – 8:00 P, ch. 26.

  About New Life Community . . .
"First of all, New Life serves families -- we have welcomed over 550 families to our residential program in our sixteen years! We focus on employment as the means to achieve independence and stability, and we are proud to say that through our empowerment-style program over 90 percent of the families who have completed the New Life program have achieved employment. And on the average, 75 percent of our graduates are still employed one year after graduation and 85 percent still in permanent housing. Our families are all sizes and shapes -- most are headed by single moms with one to six children, although this year we have been blessed to serve several two-parent families as wells. -- The adults in our New Life families come committed to acquiring the skills and tools necessary to seek and obtain employment, affordable housing, and self-sufficiency during their four-month stay with us. Our before-and after-school children's program, our dedicated volunteers from the
National Council of Jewish Women who bring us the Imagination Express, those who prepare a meal and spend a Family Fun Shop evening with our kids, the support we have from Hiram House Camp and Scotty's Place -- these are just some of the ways that we work to ensure a happy transition for the whole family . . ." Donna Asnani, Exec. Dir. (Annual Report, March 2007)

have been blessed to serve several two-parent families as wells.  -- The adults in our New Life families come committed to acquiring the skills and tools necessary to seek and obtain employment, affordable housing, and self-sufficiency during their four-month stay with us.  Our before-and after-school children's program, our dedicated volunteers from the National Council of Jewish Women who bring us the Imagination Express, those who prepare a meal and spend a Family Fun Shop evening with our kids, the support we have from Hiram House Camp and Scotty's Place -- these are just some of the ways that we work to ensure a happy transition for the whole family . . ."
