*This summer Stagecrafters Youth Theater is offering an exciting new
opportunity for students entering the 9th grade! *To continue our mission
to foster creativity, confidence and community through musical theatre, we
are thrilled to be able to offer a new and unique experience for our young
theatre artists. New York City musical theatre writer Gordon Leary will be
joining us for two sessions this summer to create new musicals tailored to
the students enrolled in our brand new Studio IX summer program!

Students participating in Studio IX will take part in a series of classes
throughout the day taught by a series of guest instructors. Each day will
also include some "lab time", in which we will write and rehearse our
workshop production. As a group, we will aim to find our own place and our
own voice in the world of theatre =96 both as young artists and creative
forces.

*CLASSES WILL INCLUDE:*

   - *CONTEXTS* =96 We will look at the trends of musical theatre
throughout each session, focusing on specific writers and periods (from
Rodgers & Hammerstein to Sondheim, operettas to rock musicals) and find =
the
way that the relatively short history of musical theatre affects what is
   happening currently.**
   - *MUSICIANSHIP* =96 Every musical theatre actor needs to know the
basics of reading music. We will learn rhythmic notation and basic
   keyboarding skills throughout the session.**
   - *MONOLOGUES* =96 Throughout the session, students will work on their
own monologues to be performed as a part of our final presentation! Fir=
st
session students will perform monologues by Shakespeare, second session
students will perform works by Oscar Wilde.**
   - *AUDITIONING* =96 In our first week, we will be joined by a special
guest to work with us on auditioning and resume writing. We'll learn
all the secrets for a successful audition! The week will culminate
   with a mock audition process.**
   - *FILM* =96 Guest filmmakers will join us in the second week of each
session to work on a short film! Together we will develop a
screenplay featuring all students. The final product will premiere as
a part of a final presentation.**
   - *THEATRICAL DESIGN* =96 Throughout the third week, we will be joined
by lighting, costume and set designers to work with us on the design for=
 our
   original productions.

Each session will have its own individual show adapted from classic
stories. As a group, we will discuss the source material and brainstorm th=
e
best ways to adapt the stories to make them our own! The stories are as
follows...

*SESSION 1: *
JUNE 11 - JULY 16
Monday - Friday, 8:45am - 3:30pm

*CHEER WARS*
Cassandra Henry-Campbell was captain of the Lancaster, Texas high
school cheerleading squad in her youth, and now that she has become the
coach, she wants nothing more than for her daughter Halle to continue the
family legacy. Halle, though, is none too pleased with all the family and
peer pressure. When Cassandra's high school rival, Isabella Percy-Peebles
moves into town with her cheerleading all-star of a daughter named Charmain=
,
Halle's resolve is tested. Should she carry on the tradition to make her
mother proud? Can she find the joy in cheerleading? Adapted from
Shakespeare's *Henry IV, Part 1.*
**
**
*SESSION 2:*
JUNe 19 - august 3
Monday - Friday, 8:45am - 3:30pm

*LAPIS: THE HAPPY SUPERMODEL*
When Nadia Collins graduates with an English degree from Boston University,
she thinks that she is ready to take on the world. The only job she can
find, though, is working as personal assistant to world-renowned Lapis, a
supermodel going through a mid-career crisis. From her penthouse apartment
in Times Square, Lapis tries to make the world more beautiful =96 sacrifici=
ng
her own manufactured beauty to find happiness instead. Based on Oscar
Wilde's short story *The Happy Prince*.

*Gordon Leary *(Director) After graduating from Vassar College in 2004 with
a degree in Drama, Gordon received his MFA from New York University's Tisch
School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. At NYU, Gordo=
n
had the opportunity to study with Broadway writers including Tony winner
Rachel Sheinkin (bookwriter of *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*=
),
Mel Marvin (composer of *The Grinch* on Broadway this past season) and
Michael John LaChiusa (writer of last season's *See What I Wanna See
*and *Bernarda
Alba*.) Additionally, he had master classes with Lee Adams (lyricist of *B=
ye
Bye, Birdie*), William Finn (*Falsettos, The 25th Annual Putnam
CountySpelling Bee
*) and Winnie Holzman (bookwriter of *Wicked*.) Works at NYU include the
one-act musicals *The Debbies *and *Sled Ride*, as well as the full-length
musical *Across the River, *which* *was just given its first reading at NYU
with cast members from the original Broadway casts of *Hairspray*, =85*Spel=
ling
Bee* and *Dreamgirls*. His writing has been seen in Cleveland at the Dobam=
a
Theater and Kalliope Stages. Additionally, he has held internships in the
education departments of both City Center Encores! and the Metropolitan
Opera Guild.
