featuring 10 of his former students, all of whom are in the midst of =20
critically acclaimed careers.

Champagne =9285 and Joel Sorensen =9289; mezzo soprano Marie Lenormand =20=

=9299; and sopranos Margaret Cusack =9275 and Kendra Colton =9283. =20
Champagne and Colton are also members of Oberlin=92s voice faculty; =20
Champagne is Associate Professor of Singing and Colton is Visiting =20
Assistant Professor of Voice. Pianists for the evening are Howard =20
Lubin and Curt Pajer. A reception will follow the concert in =20
Klutznick Commons at Peters Hall.

=93Richard Miller is a legend in the field of music,=94 =
says =20
Dean of the Conservatory David H. Stull. =93His contribution to Oberlin =20=

as an artist, teacher, and mentor has been utterly extraordinary. =20
Beyond Oberlin, his students have continually occupied the great =20
performance stages of the world and have transmitted his passion for =20
music to audiences and students alike. As a professor, his prodigious =20=

scholarly output and his teaching methods have shaped the curricula =20
of private teachers and conservatories throughout the world.=94

It is a testament to Miller=92s reputation that the =20
official journal of the National Association of Teachers of Singing =20
(NATS) published a Festschrift on the occasion of his 80th birthday. =20
Articles and essays by Miller=92s colleagues and admirers in the field =20=

fill the pages of the January/February 2007 issue of the Journal of =20
Singing. Martha Randall, president of NATS, writes in a preface to =20
the Festschrift that Miller is =93an icon in our profession.=94 An essay =
=20
by Paul Kiesgen, Professor of Music at Indiana University=92s School of =20=

Music, reads: =93I have never taken a voice lesson with Richard =20
Miller, yet I think of myself as one of his students. I have learned =20
as much about singing from Richard Miller as from anyone I have ever =20
encountered. =85 Through his teaching, extensive writings, and frequent =20=

appearances as a clinician, Richard Miller has influenced the =20
thinking of singers and teachers throughout the world.=94

Richard Miller

A native of Canton, Ohio, Richard Miller is the Wheeler Professor of =20
Singing (Emeritus) at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and founder, =20=

in 1989, of the Conservatory=92s Otto B. Schoepfle Vocal Arts Center, a =20=

high-tech studio where measurable analyses advance the art of =20
singing. He is the author of eight books about singing that are =20
standards in the field, as well as more than 120 scholarly articles. =20
His master classes are internationally acclaimed, and include =20
engagements in Austria=97where for 27 years he was visiting professor =20=

of singing at the famed Salzburg Mozarteum=97Australia, Canada, =20
England, France, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, =20
Switzerland, and nearly every state in America. His rich performance =20
career throughout Europe and America includes oratorio and recital =20
and some 50 operatic roles in more than 450 performances. He is the =20
recipient of numerous awards, honorary degrees, and honors, including =20=

France=92s coveted Chevalier/Officier, by L=92Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
