CHOREOGRAPHER MIKE MALONE AMONG 

KARAMU HOUSE HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

CLEVELAND - April 27, 2007 - Choreographer, director and teacher Mike Malone
is the latest nominee in the Karamu House Hall of Fame. Karamu will
posthumously induct Malone, who died last year in Washington, D.C. 

Karamu, the nation's oldest multicultural arts center and springboard to
success for scores of African-Americans, will honor inductees at the annual
hall of fame induction ceremony on September 8. A sold-out ceremony last
year kicked off the first hall of fame in the organization's 90-year
history. 

Malone will be inducted in the National Legend-Posthumous category at the
hall of fame celebration at the Marriot Cleveland East Hotel. Karamu will
join the theatrical community in remembering Malone as a stern, yet patient
teacher who expected nothing less than the best from his students. 

Some of those students included actors Lynne Whitfield ("Thin Line between
Love and Hate"), Anthony Anderson ("Two Can Play That Game"), Taraj
Henderson ("Hustle and Flow") and award-winning actress, dancer and
choreographer Debbie Allen ("Fame").  Allen attributes Malone's motivation
to her phenomenal success. 

Malone was director of performing arts at Karamu from 1977 to 1982. During
that time, he was a founder of the Karamu Company, a professional acting
troupe. Malone sparked a Cleveland holiday tradition in 1979 when he revived
and produced Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity," which later became his
signature event. He returned to Karamu for one final time during the
1997-1998 season and served as the interim artistic director. 

He received many awards and nominations for his television writing,
directing and choreography.  His credits include works for television's
"Fame," the Broadway production of "Raggae" and "The Great White Hope." He
was co-founder of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington and
taught at Howard University, where he was the coordinator of its musical
theater program.

Other nominees in the Karamu "Hollywood & Broadway Meet at the 'Mu" hall of
fame ceremony include:

*    Bill Cobbs (National Legend-Living), began his career in the 1960s as
an amateur actor in the Karamu House Theater and starred in "Purlie
Victorious." After leaving for New York in 1970, he amassed an impressive
list of credits and appeared in such films as "The Body Guard," "New Jack
City," and most recently with Ben Stiller in "Night at the Museum."

*    Reuben and Dorothy Silver (Local Legend-Living). Reuben arrived at
Karamu in 1955 and served as its artistic director Karamu also provided an
artistic home for Dorothy, who served in every capacity from actor and
assistant director to resident guest director.

*    Hazel Mountain Walker (Local Legend-Posthumous), a lawyer, teacher and
elementary school principal, Karamu House trustee, committee chair and
actress attributed with naming the institution in 1941. 

*    Charles Sallee' (Fine Arts), a painter and graphic artist who taught
art at Karamu and Kennard Junior High School. His works are preserved in
collections at Karamu, the National Museum of American Art in Washington,
Howard University and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

*    Emily Laster (Administrator), began as a volunteer in 1957 and retired
in 1998 after holding numerous staff positions. 

*    Chris Webb (On the Rise), a high school student, poet and actor. He
performed in Karamu's 2005 premier production of "The Little Boy Who Shook
Up the World: The Emmett Till Story" and had a role in "A Hip Hop Aesop" in
2006.

*    Congressman Louis Stokes (Benefactor). Retired congressman and longtime
supporter who secured more than $500,000 in public and private funding for
the organization. 

Karamu House has been an important part of the African-American theater
community for many years and has fostered legions of alumni who have
achieved fame nationally and internationally. Although its alumni are spread
across the country, from New York to Los Angeles, they are a tight-knit
group who hold fond memories of Karamu as their proving ground.

Alumni inducted last year included Robert Guillaume ("Benson," "Soap"),
Imani Hakeem ("Everybody Hates Chris"), choreographer Maurice "Hank"
Nystrom, internationally-acclaimed composer Howard Roberts and local
benefactor Bracy Lewis. Inducted posthumously were Karamu founders Russell
and Rowena Jelliffe, Ron O'Neal ("Super Fly") and local actors Nolan Bell
and Sparkus Fantroy,
