Johnny,

This has been an interesting discussion.  I can see why folks of Asian
influence might be offended.  But (yeah, here is that "but." part.) it also
seems that this WAS done in the context of a comedy show on the radio.true?
I mean: It seems that maybe, just maybe, folks who listened to the low level
"humor" KNEW what kind of show they were choosing to listen to?  This
incident is NOT, in my opinion, ANYTHING like the Don Imus incident.  When I
heard about those remarks made by that radio personality and in which
context he made them, well, let's just say that it was actually the FIRST
time I ever felt someone really needed to be fired for that type of
incident.  Let's face it: The man was way out of line, folks would NOT
believe they were listening to a comedy broadcast (And yeah, it was not
funny.).just the whole environment was different.

I think the Asian community is correct in letting a station know how they
feel about comedy / pranks that may well have been inappropriate.  Being of
Italian descent, I have been subjected to bad stereotyped comments OFTEN in
theater, radio.heck, let's face it MANY venues.  Sometimes I find the
"humor" offensive.sometimes I have to laugh because it is so dead on.and
other times it is just lame.  I am not sure I want all comedy to be squeaky
clean, sanitized and politically correct.  To do that, to insist that we all
eat the same bland verbal food day in and day out, just may be the start of
something much bigger than being a little (Or a lot.) offended.  

Johnny, even in your own letter to the NEohioPAL community you refer to the
radio incident as a "prank".  

With Don Imus it was not a prank, it was an insulting slip of the tongue
that degraded a fine group of women, women that I hold as role models to my
own daughter.  This "prank" by JV and Elvis is exactly that: A prank.
Perhaps a very lame one.  Perhaps one so thoughtless that many might choose
to turn off that station for ever more, but Johnny.people.do not call for
blanket censorship. (That is where this is all heading) Turn off your radio.
Write your letters.  Encourage others to do the same if you are so inclined,
but be thoughtful of what you are doing.  It has not been so long in the
American history that people lost their jobs for NOT spewing the politically
correct party line.  Let's not have the attacks this time actually come from
the arts community.

These DJs and their producers are responsible for the offensive radio
segment aired on WFNY 92.3 FM (New York City) on 5 April 2007, and
re-aired on 19 April 2007.

The segment features a prank call made by station DJs JV and Elvis to
a Chinese restaurant in which they make numerous comments that demean
Asian Pacific Americans, women, and the gay community. During the
six-minute segment, the DJs address restaurant employees as "Asian
lady" and "Chinese man"; make demands for "lots of Asian food, son of
a bitch"; and ask for "shrimp flied lice" and "some old dung."

The DJs also accost one woman on the phone, saying, "Should I come to
your restaurant so that I can see you naked. that way I can see your
hot Asian spicy ass." They tell another restaurant employee, "You are
a very nice Chinese man. probably can't drive for shit, but who
cares." The DJs also call one employee "faggy."

LETTER TO WFNY GENERAL MANAGER FROM OCA-NEW YORK, LONG ISLAND,
WESTCHESTER/HUDSON VALLEY AND NEW JERSEY

Dear Mr. Chiusano:

The New York City metropolitan area chapters of the Organization of
Chinese Americans --New York, New Jersey, Long Island and
Westchester/Hudson Valley are outraged at a segment aired on The Dog
House with JV & Elvis that involved a prank call to a Chinese
restaurant. The prank call was extremely racist, vulgar and sexist. 
To that end, OCA-NY is demanding an immediate on-air apology by JV &
Elvis, by their producer, by you and an immediate firing of JV & Elvis
and their producer.

In the segment, the caller begins by telling the first restaurant
employee, "I would like some Asian food, son of a bitch", as well as
to the second employee "I would love to have lots of Asian food, son
of a bitch." He then tells a the restaurant's female employee,
"Should I come to your restaurant so I can see you naked? " and
continues, "That way, I can see your hot Asian spicy ass." As the
caller goes on, he tells yet another employee that he would like to
some "flied lice," but not "some old dung" and indicates that "I am
training in Kung Fu, bitch" before ending with "Tell that hot Asian
girl answering the telephone, I'd like to tap her ass." 

What is especially disturbing to the Asian American community is that
the segment first aired on April 5 - just a day after Don Imus
referred to the Scarlet Knights, the Rutgers University women's
basketball team, as "nappy-headed hos." Even more infuriating is that
after CBS rightly fired Don Imus on April 12, JV & Elvis aired the
segment AGAIN on April 19. It is apparent that not only did JV &
Elvis not learn anything from the Don Imus scandal, but CBS and
CBSRadio decided that Asian Americans are easy prey for racist radio
broadcast. 

Our chapters are founding members of the Coalition Against Hate Media,
where we were successful in the firing of HOT 97 DJs for the "Tsunami
Song." that mocked dead victims of this disaster. The airing of your
segment is not so different from the time "Star" of the "Star and Buc
Wild" Program on Power 99 threatened an Indian call center operator by
calling him a "filthy rat eater." Star was suspended due to pressure
by the Asian American community. The Organization of Chinese Americans
will not tolerate any media that attempts to stereotype and harm our
community.

In addition to our above demands, we would like to meet with you and
your team immediately, along with other Asian American organizations,
to ensure incidents like this do not happen again. Until this matter
can be resolved to the satisfaction of the Asian American community,
we will ask all your advertisers to withdraw their support for your
station.

felt someone really needed to be fired for that type of incident.  =

the Asian community is correct in letting a station know how they feel =

letters.  Encourage others to do the same if you are so inclined, =

These DJs and their producers are responsible for the offensive =

segment aired on WFNY 92.3 FM (<st1:place w:st=3D"on"><st1:City =
w:st=3D"on">New
  York City</st1:City></st1:place>) on 5 April 2007, and<br>
re-aired on 19 April 2007.<br>
<br>
The segment features a prank call made by station DJs JV and Elvis =
to<br>
a Chinese restaurant in which they make numerous comments that =
demean<br>
Asian Pacific Americans, women, and the gay community. During the<br>
six-minute segment, the DJs address restaurant employees as =
"Asian<br>
lady" and "Chinese man"; make demands for "lots of =
Asian
food, son of<br>
a bitch"; and ask for "shrimp flied lice" and "some =
old
dung."<br>
<br>
The DJs also accost one woman on the phone, saying, "Should I come =
to<br>
your restaurant so that I can see you naked… that way I can see =
your<br>
hot Asian spicy ass." They tell another restaurant employee, =
"You are<br>
a very nice Chinese man… probably can't drive for shit, but =
who<br>
cares." The DJs also call one employee "faggy." <br>

metropolitan area chapters of the Organization of<br>
Chinese Americans --<st1:City w:st=3D"on">New York</st1:City>, =
<st1:State w:st=3D"on">New
 Jersey</st1:State>, <st1:place w:st=3D"on">Long Island</st1:place> =
and<br>
Westchester/<wbr>Hudson Valley are outraged at a segment aired on The =
Dog<br>
House with JV & Elvis that involved a prank call to a Chinese<br>
restaurant. The prank call was extremely racist, vulgar and sexist. <br>
To that end, OCA-NY is demanding an immediate on-air apology by JV =
&<br>
Elvis, by their producer, by you and an immediate firing of JV & =
Elvis<br>
and their producer.<br>
<br>
In the segment, the caller begins by telling the first restaurant<br>
employee, "I would like some Asian food, son of a bitch", as =
well as<br>
to the second employee "I would love to have lots of Asian food, =
son<br>
of a bitch." He then tells a the restaurant's female employee,<br>
"Should I come to your restaurant so I can see you naked? " =
and<br>
continues, "That way, I can see your hot Asian spicy ass." As =
the<br>
caller goes on, he tells yet another employee that he would like to<br>
some "flied lice," but not "some old dung" and =
indicates
that "I am<br>
training in Kung Fu, bitch" before ending with "Tell that hot =
Asian<br>
girl answering the telephone, I'd like to tap her ass." <br>
<br>
What is especially disturbing to the Asian American community is =
that<br>
the segment first aired on April 5 – just a day after Don Imus<br>
referred to the Scarlet Knights, the <st1:place =
w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Rutgers</st1:PlaceName>
 <st1:PlaceType w:st=3D"on">University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> =
women's<br>
basketball team, as "nappy-headed hos." Even more infuriating =
is that<br>
after CBS rightly fired Don Imus on April 12, JV & Elvis aired =
the<br>
segment AGAIN on April 19. It is apparent that not only did JV &<br>
Elvis not learn anything from the Don Imus scandal, but CBS and<br>
CBSRadio decided that Asian Americans are easy prey for racist radio<br>
broadcast. <br>
<br>
Our chapters are founding members of the Coalition Against Hate =
Media,<br>
where we were successful in the firing of HOT 97 DJs for the =
"Tsunami<br>
Song." that mocked dead victims of this disaster. The airing of =
your<br>
segment is not so different from the time "Star" of the =
"Star
and Buc<br>
Wild" Program on Power 99 threatened an Indian call center operator =
by<br>
calling him a "filthy rat eater." Star was suspended due to =
pressure<br>
by the Asian American community. The Organization of Chinese =
Americans<br>
will not tolerate any media that attempts to stereotype and harm our<br>
community.<br>
<br>
In addition to our above demands, we would like to meet with you and<br>
your team immediately, along with other Asian American =
organizations,<br>
to ensure incidents like this do not happen again. Until this matter<br>
can be resolved to the satisfaction of the Asian American community,<br>
we will ask all your advertisers to withdraw their support for your<br>
station.<br>
