Dear John and NeOhioPals-

I appreciate your response to the email that I initiated John, and though
you may be unaware of how my argument still applies, I appreciate your
effort to be clearer. I am the founder of the GOT PAY? Organization,
founded in 2005. It is an artists advocacy and education resource for rates,
standards and practices in the entertainment industry. It is with all due
respect that I am responding to you and all of the parties who may be
concerned, in one email.

The fact is, no matter who has to fund the project, or why you want to
produce the recording, you are requesting that someone with specific talents
participate for no pay. It is for your company, regardless of whether it is
for fun or whether there is are immediate, future or no profits realized as
a result. Since you normally use employees for your project, I can only
assume that there wasn't anyone there who could do the British accent which
is why you sought out a professional. Great idea, but the circumstances are
completely different. The artist is not an employee of your company. They
will more likely be self-employed, as an actor.

Hundreds of union actors in the Cleveland area perform in industrials for a
living, on and off camera. Some recordings are just for fun like your
project. But they are still on company time for company use. For that
matter, many of us also perform comedy material for private parties in
peoples homes. We still get paid. If you have to fund the recording, you
have to fund the recording. My computer repair company charges me whether I
am using my computer for fun or business. They don't care why I need my
computer fixed. They charge me to fix it.

There are exceptions of course, where benefits and fundraiser events arise
asking for an artist to "donate" their services. But even then, there is
almost always pay for the artists services, even if it is not at their usual
rate.

I can only suggest that you pay something for that persons time. Maybe not
the union rate of $385, but something.

I started an organization to help artists realize their worth. I appreciate
you taking the time to respond to that effort.

Sincerely-

Devoted advocate and founder of the GOT PAY? Organization-

Jean Zarzour

Subject: [NEohioPAL]PLEASE READ: Looking for voice over for safety video

It has been brought to my attention that my posting for voice over artists
with no pay has been miss read and was not made clear in the original post.
Please let me clarify my intentions and maybe ease some irate minds out
there. First of all THIS IS NOT A CORPORATE video. At my place of
employment, we are required to have a weekly safety meeting. At those
meetings, employees take turns giving a presentation on a safety topic.
They are very informal. In the past, when it was my turn, I chose to make a
short video instead of standing up and giving a boring speech and handing
out flyers. My fellow employees have come to enjoy the break in routine of
these meetings with my videos. The videos are produced on my own time with
my own money (if I need any). No one but employees see these videos. NO ONE
makes any money and NO PRODUCTS are promoted. These are simply fun
alternatives to giving a safety speech. I apologize if anyone has felt I was
trying (or more appropriate my company) was trying to get something for
nothing while making a huge profit on free talent. The company I work for
has nothing to to do with the production of these videos. All the actors in
the past have been employees who work here. I hope this helps clear up
things. My intentions were not presented clearly, and again I apologize for
that. If anyone has any further concerns, please feel free to e-mail me. I
will do my best to explain and answer your questions.
