Let me first say that I am all for paying people to help you out. If my neighbor helps me move my couch I offer him $20. If the kid down the street mows my lawn I give him $30.
But, if you are not a Union actor, you do not deserve to be paid $385 an hour for anything. Especially if the person asking for your contribution is not making any profit from it.
John asking for help with his business presentation is no different than a college student asking for help to make his final film project look good. Are we going to start telling every person who wants to create something new and exciting that they have to fork out Union rates to every Tom, Dick, Harry and Jane? Aft
If you are a Union actor, yes you must be paid what your Union requires. Of course, if you are a Union actor you are aware of this and if you do profitable work for someone for free it's your own dumb fault.
If you are not a Union actor, your agent will negotiate your pay for you. If you are not Union and you do not have an agent, chances are you are just starting out and any work is worth your time. No matter how little it pays.
However, I do agree that out of good conciousness you should offer some kind of pay. $30 or $50 is more than enough.
