Re: To all neopal readers a must read. (Andrew Dutton)
Not all projects have the multi-million dollar budgets that it seems Mr.
Dutton has become accustomed to working on, but I for one appreciate the
postings here, paid or not, and I'm sure many others do as well.
It's hard to get started in this city. A year ago I offered my time for free
as a Set Photographer. I advertised ONE ENTIRE DAY of my time to any
production wishing to take advantage of my service in the hopes of widening
my contact network and adding to my portfolio.
Mr. Dutton saw the ad and was eager to take me up on the offer. He said he
had a project that would be perfect -- except that it was taking place at
unscheduled times throughout the following 12 MONTH PERIOD. He said I must
commit to the project, be on-call, able to show up on-set within a 4-hour
notice, and do it entirely for free.
I reiterated that I was only offering ONE DAY of free photography, but asked
for specifics on his project, thinking that Id at least consider it if it
was something that interested me.
Mr. Dutton told me that (paraphrasing) "details are not revealed to those
who cant commit" -- and that was it. Apparently if I couldnt offer an
entire year of my time, for free, to an unscheduled, randomly filmed
production with a 4-hour on-call window, then I was of no use to him
whatsoever.
So, while it is often true that you often get what you pay for -- and people
do try to take advantage of those who are willing to work for free -- I'm
glad this mailing list is open to all, regardless of budget, level of
"professionalism", and project type.
Sincerely,
Craig
