You're right, Jean. This company is a going concern and should have the budget for such items. They should not exploit actors who are just dying to do some work for the credit.
I doubt the director and camera people will be working gratis.

Imagine if there were no Actors Equity Association, kids from musical theatre programs would be working on Broadway for minimum wage just to get noticed.

The only time I could permit doing a no pay gig would be for a charitable organization where there is an eelomosynary purpose. And even then such organizations set aside budgets to pay talent.

Dear NeOhioPals- I read the request for someone to do an "Industrial Voice Over" NO PAY, and as you can well imagine, it got my attention as the founder of the GOT PAY? Organization. Please visit www.gotpay.org for more information.

While it has been my aim to dissuade artists from being exploited by working for no pay in commercials, the same argument applies when a company, large or small, is looking for someone to do an "Industrial Voice Over" for no pay.

"Industrials" fall under the same category as commercials: an opportunity to promote, sell, market or educate consumers and/or company members toward higher profit for a company. They just are not broadcast on TV or Radio. They are for company use. However, this industrial is also slated to be used for their website, making it a GLOBAL on-line advertisement as well. Even if the company uses your voice over for an intranet communication tool, it is yet a second application of your work in addition to the video, adding even more value to the work you do.

The Valspar Co. has been in business globally since 1806 and has "0 budget" when they need a performer to represent their product. Not only that, YOU have to record the material yourself and send a CD at your own expense!

Just as a guideline, the published union rate for an actor in an "Off camera" - "Non Broadcast" role is a flat rate of roughly $385 for the first hour and $101 for every 1/2 hour of recording after that. The only difference between union industrials and commercials is that you do not get residual pay from industrials. Regardless of how an industrial voice over recording is used, you are giving away your talent unnecessarily. A fare rate is what ever you can negotiate with the client, but using this guideline will hopefully give you more leverage.

Remember: If money is made, the talent gets PAID!

I am looking for 2 actors/VO artists who can do an English accent to record some dialog for a short (5 minute) safety video I need to do for my company. The scenes involve some banter back and forth between 2 aerosol paint cans (which will be puppets in the video). I need for you to have the capability to be able to record the lines of dialog on a cd and send the cd to me. I will then use the soundtrack to put the video together. This is a 0 budget project, but I can supply a copy of the dvd when complete for your time. You will also be credited in the video. The video will be used at our weekly safety meetings, and possible be shown on our corporate website. Anyone interested please e-mail me at jmartin at valspar.com and I will discuss this further and can supply a copy of the script.

  Thanks,
  John Martin
