Hi all,

I've been soaking up all the good advice to those who are LA bound as I =
will be someday. Thanks heaps.

A couple of points to mention:

Arm yourself before you leave with a fab book called Extra Work for =
Brain Surgeons by Angela Bertolino ( available at Amazon for 18.15 on =
sale right now). If you read this book on your way or before you go, you =
can literally be employed as an extra within hours of arrival. There are =
many extra casting agencies who will sign you up immediately (for about =
$20-25) to register. After that it is a matter of phoning their casting =
line to see what's being cast that day.=20
This could fill a void while you find an appropriate regular job. It =
also gets you on the set so you can become familiar with how things =
work out there. The pay isn't great but gets better if you get to =
overtime hours which happens frequently.=20
On my last trip out I had an unscheduled 9 hour layover in Las Vegas and =
used this book to call every agency's casting line so by the time I got =
there I knew what was being cast. It has a wealth of other great info =
and is updated so the info is current.

I know you think that extra work is a step backwards from what you're =
doing here (most likely it is), consider that most of those you think of =
as stars have done extra work at some point in time. Case in point:
If you watch Paul Newman's fabulous speech to the jury in the film The =
Verdict, there's a younger Bruce Willis sitting as an extra in the =
courtroom watching close up one of Hollywoods all time greats perform.

A note about driving:

I went out with a lot of trepidation about driving the freeways but I =
have to say that I didn't find it any different than rush hour driving =
here. Do what makes sense for going anywhere in heavy traffic: start =
early, plan ahead, drive defensively. But do try to plan your travel for =
times other than rush hour. And for sure get your Thomas Guide and keep =
it with you.=20

See ya there someday,
