Get Hep has been involved with a 4 year music, dance, and arts grant at Den=
ison Elementary School (near 25th and the zoo) and now has an after school =
program for 22 especially talented and dedicated swing dancers in the 5th g=
rade. (This school year we have worked with every single student in the 2nd=
, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.) Our goal has been to study popular culture from =
the 1920s through the 1980s and reflect on how it has been affected by and =
has affected transportation and technology over time. On Saturday May 19th =
our little swing dancers will be performing a Jitterbug and Lindy routine t=
o The Buddy Johnson Orchestra's song "Shufflin' and Rollin'."  The show is =
at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of this year's "Rock Your World: =
All-City Arts Festival".  There will also be performances by other Denison =
students including a 3rd grade class singing and playing xylophone to Louis=
 Jordan's "Beans and Cornbread".  I saw them perform it once before and the=
y are hysterically good! These little ones perform it like they are preachi=
n' a sermon of hell, fire, and brimstone.  There is also a 5th grade class =
playing Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" on the xylophone.  I have yet to see=
 them do their thing yet, but the rumor in the school is that they are gett=
in' super funky on it!=20
Many ICARE (see below) arts programs will be showcased that day from 10am t=
o 4pm. The All Stars will be performing from11:40am to 12 noon on stage G i=
nside the Rock Hall on the fourth floor.  We would love to have you in the =
audience!  I think you will really enjoy the show by the Denison students a=
nd all of the other students as well.
In past years, this event has attracted over 10,000 community members, incl=
uding leaders form the Cleveland Municipal School District and the City of =
Cleveland.=20

WHAT is the ICARE Program?=20
The Initiative for Cultural Arts in Education (ICARE) is a program that sup=
ports long-term arts-focused educational partnerships between the Cleveland=
 Municipal School District (CMSD) and the Northeast Ohio cultural community=
. ICARE seeks to improve student achievement in both the arts and academic =
subjects. The partnerships treat the arts as a way of learning, a catalyst =
for motivating students and expanding their world. In ICARE partnerships, t=
he arts become part of the daily education of students, both as distinct di=
sciplines and in combination with other subjects.
