BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

Echoi
Named after a quartet by Lukas Foss, Echoi represents a fusion of the =20=

American experimentalist and European avant-garde movements. The =20
ensemble was founded as a chamber music extension of the Oberlin =20
Contemporary Music Ensemble, directed by Strickland Gardner Professor =20=

of Music Timothy Weiss, and is dedicated to performing works by =20
composers considered underrepresented in the United States. The =20
sextet delves deeply into demanding scores and performs primarily =20
without a director.

Flutist Alice Teyssier strives to further contemporary chamber music =20
in the United States by finding unique ways to program and present =20
little-known works. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in flute =20
and vocal performance at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2006, =20
where she studied with Professor of Flute Michel Debost, Associate =20
Professor of Singing Lorraine Manz, and Strickland Gardner Professor =20
of Music Timothy Weiss. Ms. Teyssier will earn a Master of Music =20
degree in opera theater at Oberlin in May; her thesis focuses on the =20
history of video techniques in opera. One of Echoi=92s cofounders, she =20=

has performed throughout the United States as a member of the =20
prestigious Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. Her interest in =20
contemporary music has led her abroad to the Ensemble Akademie =20
Freiburg in Germany, and Centre Acanthes in Metz, France, where she =20
worked with notable contemporary flutists Martin Fahlenbock and Mario =20=

Caroli. Under Caroli=92s guidance, she will pursue a specialization =20
diploma at the Conservatoire National de R=E9gion in Strasbourg, =20
France, this fall. As a soprano, Ms. Teyssier has performed with the =20
Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble and the Oberlin Opera Theater, =20
and in February 2007 she interpreted the role of Alice/Renee in =20
Oberlin=92s American premiere of Olga Neuwirth=92s Lost Highway.

Cellist Gabrielle Athayde studies with Assistant Professor of Cello =20
Darrett Adkins at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she is =20
pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. She is the =20
recipient of the Loretta M. Kearns =9143 Endowed Scholarship for Music. =20=

A cellist since the age of 4, Ms. Athayde has studied chamber music =20
with many of today=92s great performers, including cellists Mistlav =20
Rostropovich and Joel Krosnick. She performed with the Oberlin =20
Contemporary Music Ensemble in Oberlin=92s American premiere of Olga =20
Neuwirth=92s music theater work Lost Highway. Other recent performances =20=

include an all-Ligeti program with violinist Jennifer Koh =9297, a =20
world premiere with internationally acclaimed percussionist Steven =20
Schick, and a concert of Sir Harrison Birtwistle=92s music, coached by =20=

the composer. Ms. Athayde is featured in the PBS documentary =20
Soundmix: The Story of Five Young Musicians, which profiles her work =20
both as a classical cellist and a rock bassist.

Hailing from Buffalo, New York, percussionist Jon Hepfer specializes =20
in contemporary chamber and solo repertoire. He will graduate in May =20
with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of =20
Music, where he has studied with Professor of Percussion Michael =20
Rosen and Strickland Gardner Professor of Music Timothy Weiss. A =20
founding member of Echoi, Mr. Hepfer regularly performs with =20
Oberlin=92s Contemporary Music Ensemble and Oberlin Percussion Group. =20=

During his time at Oberlin, Mr. Hepfer has worked with many renowned =20
figures in contemporary music, including Jean-Pierre Drouet, Michael =20
Finnissy, Phillippe Manoury, Professor of Composition Lewis Nielson, =20
Olga Neuwirth, Steve Reich, David Robertson, the Slee Sinfonietta, =20
Ensemble SurPlus, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Mr. Hepfer has =20
attended the Aspen Music Festival, the Bang on a Can Summer =20
Institute, Centre Acanthes, New England Conservatory=92s Summer =20
Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice, June in Buffalo, and =20=

Carnegie Hall=92s Professional Training Workshops. This summer, he will =20=

participate in the Lucerne Festival, where he will work with Pierre =20
Boulez and the members of Ensemble Intercontemporain. This fall he =20
plans to attend the University of California at San Diego, where he =20
will play in the red fish blue fish percussion group and study with =20
Steven Schick.

Currently in his second year at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, =20
Curt Miller studies clarinet performance with Associate Professor of =20
Clarinet Richard Hawkins. In addition to his work with Echoi, Mr. =20
Miller performs a wide range of chamber music, and was invited to =20
participate in the 2007 Festival of Music in Santa Catarina, Brazil, =20
as part of a woodwind quintet from Oberlin. He has participated in =20
master classes with Larry Combs, J. Lawrie Bloom, and Anthony McGill. =20=

He studied clarinet with Steve Cohen at the Brevard Music Center in =20
2006. Before coming to Oberlin, Curt performed as principal clarinet =20
of both the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Encore Chamber =20
Orchestra, which toured central Europe in 2005.

Solon Gordon is a fourth-year student at Oberlin. A participant in =20
the school=92s double-degree program, he is pursuing undergraduate =20
degrees in piano performance in the Conservatory of Music , where he =20
studies with Professor of Piano Monique Duphil, and mathematics in =20
the College of Arts and Sciences. In high school, Mr. Gordon=92s love =20=

of chamber music flourished under the guidance of Sandra Dennis at =20
the Community Music School of Springfield, Massachusetts, and Deborah =20=

Sherr at Greenwood Music Camp. Since then, he has developed his =20
collaborative skills through his participation at the Kneisel Hall =20
and Musicorda Chamber Music festivals, as well as through extensive =20
accompanying and chamber music performance at the Oberlin Conservatory.

Violinist Yuncong Zhang was born in Changchun in the People=92s =20
Republic of China, and grew up in an active musical family. She =20
studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with Professor of Violin =20=

Marilyn McDonald. Ms. Zhang has been invited to many music festivals, =20=

among them the New York String Seminar in Carnegie Hall, Taos School =20
of Music in New Mexico, the Music Academy of the West in Santa =20
Barbara, and the Aspen Music Festival. She was a prizewinner at the =20
2004 Kingsville International Competition in Texas. As a member of =20
the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble, she has performed works by =20
such composers as Oliver Knussen, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and Gy=F6rgy =20=

Ligeti. This is Ms. Zhang=92s second performance at the Kennedy Center; =20=

she was selected by members of the Oberlin faculty to perform as =20
soloist in 2005.

Composer Marcelle Pierson hails from Houston, Texas. She is pursuing =20
a double major in composition and theory at the Oberlin Conservatory =20
of Music, where she studies with Professor of Composition Lewis =20
Nielson and Associate Professor of Music Theory Rebecca Leydon. Ms. =20
Pierson has attended the Darmstadt Festival and the Midwest =20
Composers=92 Symposium. Her works have been performed throughout the =20
country by a variety of notable performers and ensembles, including =20
Jason Calloway and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony.

Steuart Pincombe is a second-year performance major at the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music, where he studies cello with Assistant =20
Professor of Cello Darrett Adkins and viola da gamba with Associate =20
Professor of Viola da Gamba and Cello Catharina Meints. Prior to his =20
studies at Oberlin, Steuart was a member of the Springfield Symphony =20
of Missouri, electric cellist of the Humours (an experimental-music =20
ensemble), and cellist of the Ozarka Piano Trio. As soloist, Steuart =20
has performed with the Springfield Symphony, the Springfield Youth =20
Symphony, the Ozark Festival Orchestra, and the Missouri State =20
University Chamber Orchestra. He has collaborated in chamber concerts =20=

with several renowned artists, including violinist Mark Peskanov, =20
pianist Jeffrey Beigel, organist Matti Pesonen, and guitarist Dusan =20
Bogdanovich. Steuart has appeared in solo and chamber music =20
performances in such venues as the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, =20=

BargeMusic, Riverside Cathedral, and Avery Fischer Hall. He has been =20
the featured artist on the KSMU 91.1 =93Studio Live!=94 radio concert =20=

series, has performed for several radio stations in Bloomington, =20
Indiana, and has been interviewed by Brian Newhouse from Minnesota =20
Public Radio. For the past two summers Steuart has attended the =20
Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine, where he was =20=

a student of Joel Krosnick and Barbara Stein Mallow. This summer he =20
will be a counselor at the Credo music festival in Oberlin and will =20
attend the second session of the Aspen Music School and Festival.
