FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Paul Dwyer, a Senior Cello Performance Major at the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music, Named Javits Fellow

OBERLIN, OH (May 16, 2007) =97 Cellist Paul Dwyer, a senior at the =20
Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, has received a =20
Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. The award, more than $40,000 a year for =20
up to four years, will cover Dwyer=92s tuition and fees and provide a =20=

stipend while he pursues a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in cello =20
performance with Professor Richard Aaron at the University of Michigan.

Administered by the U.S. Department of Education, =20
Javits Fellowships are awarded to only two music students in the =20
nation each year.

The 23-year-old Dwyer is a student of Assistant =20
Professor of Cello Amir Eldan at Oberlin, where he also has studied =20
baroque cello with Associate Professor of Viola da Gamba and Cello =20
Catharina Meints and cello with former Professor Peter Rejto and =20
former Visiting Professor Hans-J=F8rgen Jensen.

=93Oberlin as a whole has broadened my musical horizon,=94 =
says =20
Dwyer. =93The presence of the historical performance program has =20
provided me with the opportunity to start playing baroque cello and =20
to play in a baroque orchestra. On the other end of the spectrum, the =20=

enthusiasm with which contemporary music is performed and fostered at =20=

Oberlin has changed my point of view regarding new music.=94

Born in Munster, Indiana, and raised in Vienna, Austria, =20=

and Munich, Germany, Dwyer began playing the cello when he was six =20
years old. In 2001, he won second place in the Jugend Musiziert, a =20
German competition for young musicians, and was invited to join the =20
National Youth Orchestra of Germany, with which he toured several =20
European countries, made recordings, and appeared in televised =20
performances conducted by Gerd Albrecht and G=FCnther Schiller.

Since enrolling at the Oberlin Conservatory, Dwyer has =20
won the Luigi Silva Memorial Award for Best Cello Performance at the =20
2005 Corpus Christi International Competition for Strings (Texas), =20
second place in the 2005 International Heida Hermanns Competition for =20=

Strings, the Cleveland Cello Society=92s 2005 Agnew Prize for Best =20
Interpretation of a Bach Suite, and first place in the 2006 Hellam =20
Young Artist Competition. This year, he won the $2,500 second prize =20
and the Audience Choice Award at the Schadt String Competition for =20
Cello, held in March 2007 in Allentown, Pennsylvania; and the top =20
prize at the Tuesday Musical Association=92s Scholarship Competition in =20=

Akron, Ohio =97 the $1,400 Arden J. Yockey Scholarship for Strings.

             A 2006 recipient of Oberlin=92s Ernest Hatch Wilkins =20
Memorial Prize, given in recognition of academic excellence, Dwyer =20
was one of four winners of the Conservatory=92s 2006-07 Concerto =20
Competition. Winners of the annual competition receive the honor of =20
performing as soloist with the Oberlin Orchestra or Oberlin Chamber =20
Orchestra. Dwyer performed Shostakovich=92s Concerto No. 1 for Cello =20
and Orchestra in E-flat, Op. 107, with the Oberlin Orchestra under =20
the baton of Bridget-Michaele Reischl, Music Director of the Oberlin =20
Orchestras, in a May 2007 concert dedicated to Oberlin=92s retiring =20
president Nancy S. Dye.

After completing his graduate studies, Dwyer plans a =20
career as a performer. =93I love performing,=94 he says. =93I can see =20=

myself in a wide variety of ensembles, ranging from orchestras to =20
chamber music groups, performing all types of music. Eventually, I =20
might also be interested in teaching.=94

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865 and situated amid =20
the intellectual vitality of Oberlin College since 1867, is the =20
oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States. =20
Renowned internationally as a professional music school of the =20
highest caliber and pronounced a =93national treasure=94 by the =20
Washington Post, Oberlin=92s alumni have gone on to achieve illustrious =20=

careers in all aspects of the serious music world. For more =20
information about Oberlin, please visit www.oberlin.edu.
