  Lakeland Theatre
  announces auditions for
  Harper Lee's

  To Kill a Mockingbird
  by
  Christopher Sergel
  Directed by Martin Friedman
Sets and Lights Designed by Keith Nagy
  Costumes Designed by Craig Tucker
   Sound Design by Eric Simna

  THE STORY
A beautifully crafted adaptation (with her permission) of Harper Lee's classic novel. Like the book and the fillm version, the play focuses on the violent events in a small town in Alabama in 1935 through the eyes of a young girl. Growing up with her brother Jem and father Atticus, Scout looks at the world with open eyes. Tom Robinson a black man, is wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit and is later shot down by prison guards as he tries to escape. In anguish Scout asks her father how such a thing could be done to Tom. Atticus replies, "Because he wasn't 'Tom' to them." The special beauty of Harper Lee's work is that she takes us inside the people of her book, and in their various individual ways, each becomes "Tom" to us.
This is a grand adaptation and Lakeland Theatre plans on putting on a first-class production. Wonderful roles.

  Auditions:
  Monday, May 21, 2007 6:30-7:30pm Children
                                          7:45 till 9:00pm Adults

All auditions will be held at Lakeland Community College's Performing Arts Center (PAC). Sorry, no Equity contracts for this production. No need to prepare a monologue. I will have you read directly from the script. Additional auditions and callbacks only as necessary; ALL ROLES ARE WELL COMPENSATED.

  Production and Rehearsal dates:
To Kill a Mockingbird will open on Friday, September 14 and run through September 30, 2007. There will be two student matinees. Of course you will be compensated for all performances. Rehearsals will begin sometime in August and I will work around everyone's vacations.
EACH CHARACTER IS WONDERFUL AND COMPELLINGLY DRAWN. SURELY EACH OF THESE ROLES WILL BE CHALLENGING AND FUN TO PLAY. A VERY THEATRICAL PIECE.

  The Roles:
Atticus Finch: Already cast. Mark Cipra.
Jean Louis Finch (SCOUT): A young girl around 9 or 10 years old. The actress can be older but she must look around 9/10. She is courageous and forthright.
Jeremy Finch (JEM): Scout's brother is a few years older, between 13 and 15 (at the oldest). He is a brave fellow trying to figure out life. Seeking to please his father.
Calpurnia: Black, proud and capable. She is Scout and Jem's nanny; Indeed, she has raised them. She is a self-educated woman and is very good in most things. Her standards are very high and her discipline is uncompromising.
Dill: Small, and wise beyond his years, he is about the same age as Jem (13-15). There's an undercurrent of sophistication and sadness to him.
Maudie Atkinson: Younger than Atticus (who's very close to 50), but of his generation. She is a very sensitive woman. She has wosdom and compassion that suggests the best of the South of that period of time. In this adaptation, Miss Maudie speaks directly to the audience. A much more finely developed character in the play than the film.
Walter Cunningham: A hard-up farmer who shares the prejudices of this time and place but who is nevertheless a man who can be reached as a human being. Between late 20's -late 30's.
Reverend Sykes: A Black Minister. He's an imposing man with a strong stage presence. 40's-60's.
Heck Tate: Heck is the town sheriff and complex man. He does his duty as he sees it and enforces the law without favor. Terrific role. 30's-50's.
Stephanie Crawford: The neighborhood gossip. Late 30's to 50's.
Boo Radley: Arthur Radley is a pale recluse. In his 40's or so.
Mrs. Dubose: She is an old woman. Bitter, biting and angry.
Tom Robinson: Robinson is black, handsome and vital, but with a left hand crippled by a childhood accident. He is married to Helen and they have young children. Dignity is his middle name. THIS IS A GREAT ROLE. 20's/30's.
Judge Taylor: He does what he can within the context of his time to see justice done. While he tries to run his court impartially, his sympathy is with Tom. 40's-60's.
Mr. Gilmer: Public Prosecuter who is doing his job to prosecute Tom. In many ways his manner is cruel and hurtful. Under all this however, he does have his doubts about Tom's guilt. Late 20's-30's.
Bob Ewell: Lives with his family in near the town dump. Thinks this trial will make him important. " The town gave them Christmas baskets, welfare money, and the back of their hand."- Harper Lee. Great role. late 30's-50's.
Mayella Ewell: The oldest daughter of Bob Ewell, shes a desperately longely and overworked young woman whose need for companionship--any companionship-- has overwhelmed every other emotion. 18-25years old.

The aforementioned roles are great and demand great actors!
