FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -Wednesday, May 30, 2007

August Wilson's King Hedley II at Karamu House is precursor to August
Wilson's Radio Golf being performed on Broadway!!!

Karamu Performing Arts Theatre Presents the Ohio Premier

of August Wilson's King Hedley II

directed by Caroline Jackson Smith

May 25 - June 17, 2007 - Jelliffe Theatre

King Hedley II is set in a backyard in the decaying urban Hill District of
Pittsburgh where a scarred King Hedley II, who served seven years in jail
for murdering his attacker is trying to obtain a better life for his wife
Tonya and his unborn child. King is trying to rebuild his life by peddling
stolen refrigerators in the feeble hope of making enough money to open a
video store and declares he will let nothing get in the way of his dream.
Cast members King Hedley II (E. B. Smith) is accompanied by his wife Tonya
(Regan Player), best friend Mister (Anthony Elfonzia Nickerson-El),
neighborhood spiritualist Stool Pidgeon (Jaribu Sasa), recently-returned
singer and mother, Ruby (Joyce Meadows) and her long time love Elmore
(Cornell H. Calhoun III).

Tony Brown, Plain Dealer critic says about E. B. Smith as Hedley .. "Taut,
beefy and boiling, he's the angry young man with a dream who would rule the
world if he could only (or even wanted to) blow out the fuse on the bomb of
his own making destined to blow it all away."

In this play which seems more timely than ever and sets up the events in
Wilson's last play, Radio Golf, currently playing on Broadway, the questions
of how we triumph over centuries of violence, bitterness and exclusion are
fresh and current. Yet always we strive to realize as well, as Stool Pigeon
reminds us that, "God has a plan," and that "forgiveness is the key to the
kingdom."

Dance artist, Dianne McIntyre and Karamu Alum, is known for her work in
modern dance and theatre. She is a winner of both a 2007 Guggenheim
Fellowship and a 2006 Cleveland Arts Prize. Ms. McIntyre created the
original waltz choreography for the Broadway production of King Hedley II
and has recreated the waltz dance scene as Choreographer for Karamu's
production.

This talented, experienced cast, an award winning Playwright, an award
winning Director and an award winning Choreographer makes Karamu's Ohio
Premier of King Hedley II a "must see" production. Call Karamu's box office
at 216-795-7077 for tickets or visit the website and purchase them on line
