FROZEN

June 1-24, 2007

Lakewood, Ohio - Beck Center for the Arts presents Frozen, the gripping
psychological drama by British playwright, Bryony Lavery, in the
intimate Studio Theater, June 1-24, 2007. This chilling play was
nominated for four Tony Awards in 2004 and contains subject matter that
many may find disturbing. =20
Inspired by several famous child-murder cases in the English Midlands,
Frozen is a powerful piece about the abduction and murder of a
ten-year-old girl. Through this tragic event, the lives of three
strangers - a remorseless convicted child-killer, the mother of one of
his victims and a researcher who studies serial killers - become
interconnected. Each of them suffers from the inability to cope with
their emotions and has become psychologically "frozen." As the story
develops, they struggle with their emotional paralysis and seek
understanding and forgiveness. =20
The Beck Center's production of this dark drama is directed by
award-winning director, Sarah May. "Frozen asks so many powerful
questions," remarked May, "How do you go on with your life after a
shocking tragedy? How do you find the ability to forgive? Audiences
will be discussing this thought-provoking play long after the final
bows."
To facilitate this discussion, the Beck Center will host two post-show
"talk-backs" to discuss the controversial issues surrounding this
compelling play. Audience members are invited to participate in these
discussions immediately following performances on Friday, June 8 and
Saturday, June 16. =20
The June 8th talk-back session will feature David L. Doughten, a
well-known criminal defense attorney, and Rev. Dr. Rollin Conway, pastor
of Bay Village United Methodist Church and an opponent of capital
punishment. Mr. Doughten has represented defendants in capital cases in
Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. He was involved in Ohio's first capital
case as an attorney with the public defender's office and has acquired a
reputation of being an expert in the field. Mr. Doughten is a frequent
speaker at Continuing Legal Education (CLE) because of his experience in
representing capital clients. Rev. Dr. Conway is a member of the
Methodists Federation for Social Action (MFSA), a group within the
United Methodist Church dedicated to promoting progressive, socially
responsibility action in addressing the social ills of our time. He
will share his insight on the subject of forgiveness.=20
Michael D. Dwyer, PhD., will be the panelist featured at the June 16th
talk-back discussion. Dr. Dwyer, a licensed Counseling Psychologist
and Professor of Psychology at Baldwin-Wallace College, is currently
involved in the study of the importance of early intervention as the
best strategy for developing normal interpersonal skills in children. =20
Director Sarah May returns to the Beck Center after directing last
year's impassioned drama, The Diary of Anne Frank in February 2006. "I
am thrilled to be directing another exciting and timely play at the Beck
Center" said May. "This production, with its amazing cast will be a
totally riveting theatrical experience." The cast of Frozen features
Jason Markouc* as the child killer, Derdriu Ring* as the victim's mother
and Liz Conway as the researcher.=20
This production of Frozen is sponsored by Cox Communications, WCPN 90.3
FM ideastream, LakewoodBuzz.com, and the FreeTimes. Show times are
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. There is no
performance on Sunday, June 3. To reserve tickets, call the Beck Center
Box Office at (216) 521-2540 or online at www.beckcenter.org
<http://www.beckcenter.org/> . Ticket prices are $28 for adults, $25
for seniors and $17 for students (22 and under with I.D.) and include a
$2 administrative fee. Group discounts are available for parties of 12
or more. Rush tickets for students (22 and under with I.D.) are offered
for $10 on Sundays only, 30 minutes prior to curtain, based on
availability. Convenient on-site parking is available. Beck Center for
the Arts is located just ten minutes west of downtown Cleveland at 17801
Detroit Avenue in Lakewood.=20
Programming at the Beck Center is made possible through the generous
support
of The Cleveland Foundation, the George Gund Foundation, the John P.
