SCHOOL’S OUT: DO YOUR KIDS HAVE A PLAN?

They Could Be Spending the Summer With Talented Artists

The Arts Collinwood day camp brings children together with professional artists to learn new ways of seeing, acting and creating. The program opens young eyes and lends skill to small hands. The campers learn that they can do remarkable things, both in making art and in working with other people. Shy children learn to speak in public; aggressive children learn to compromise.

Professional artists do the teaching, supervised by director John Krol (Director of Music at Hawken Middle School, and well known for his musical productions). Drama is being taught by Rachel Fichter, a theatre arts graduate from the College of Wooster, experienced in teaching children at several grade levels; this year’s art teacher is Craig Brent Sullivan, who teaches in Arts Collinwood’s after-school program, and led Collinwood High School students to the Governor’s Regional Award of Excellence in an enameling program.

The staff are assisted by teachers’ aides and junior counselors. Campers are lavished with individual attention. And there are always snacks between classes.

Thanks to a grant from Neighborhood Connections (the small grant program of the Cleveland Foundation), this year’s counselors will receive 10 hours of training in art and drama techniques, and in child direction, helping them to be excellent role models.

Camp always ends in a burst of creativity, with a performance and art show for family, friends and the community. This year’s campers will also play a role in the annual Waterloo Arts Festival on July 28.

Camp meets Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday mornings from 9 to 12, for sessions of hands-on art, writing and acting, occasional field trips and work with visiting artists.
Children from five to twelve years may register; young teens (13-15) can apply to be junior counselors.

This summer’s camp will run from Tuesday, June 19, to Thursday, August 2 (no camp the week of July 4). The six-week program costs $240 ($120 for siblings). Some financial assistance is available.
