Charlie is depressed. His troublesome wife is in the hospital, and his
entire existence seems bland and pointless. To cheer him up, Charlie's
old British Army buddy 'Froggy' plans a change of scene for him by
bringing him along on a trip to the backwoods of Georgia, where Froggy
will be giving a talk on the use of explosives. Since Charlie isn't
allowed inside the military base, Froggy sets him up at the nearby
"Betty Meeks's Fishing Lodge Resort". Froggy tells Betty that Charlie's
a foreigner who can't understand or speak any English, in hopes that the
folks at the lodge will leave him in peace. With Charlie pretending that
he doesn't understand anyone, the groundwork is laid for a hilarious
comedy of errors in which the lid is blown off of all of the small
town's darkest secrets and devious plots.
When it premiered, Larry Shue's /The Foreigner/ was awarded two OBIE
(off-Broadway theatre) awards and two Outer Critics Circle awards as
'Best New American Play' and 'Best Off-Broadway Production'.
