                    JOHN COWAN BAND
  Friday, July 6 -- 8:00 PM
The lead vocalist of New Grass Revival and one of the greatest tenors in popular music, John Cowan IS the voice of New Grass!
In the 1970's, John Cowan rose to fame when he became the lead singer of New Grass Revival, which explored an explosive new brand of bluegrass. The band remained at the forefront of the music scene for 20 years, before disbanding in 1990.
Cowan circled among different genres before settling back into his familiar acoustic sound and formed the John Cowan band. The band features some of the best acoustic performers today, including Jeff Autry (guitar), Wayne Benson (mandolin), Shad Cobb (fiddle), and Noam Pikelny (banjo).
The two bands have a lot in common with each other.
The band has recently released their first album, "New Tattoo", produced by Jay Joyce for Pinecastle Records.

        TRACY GRAMMER
with JIM HENRY
  Saturday, July 7 -- 8:00 PM
Born in Homestead, Florida and raised in southern California, Grammer comes from a musical family. Cousin Leo Fortin played double trumpets in Lawrence Welk's band, while her grandmothers and mother played keyboards and accordion. But it was her guitar-playing father who was her first true inspiration.
At the age of nine, Grammer began choral and classical violin studies and led regional and school orchestras until she left home for the University of California, Berkeley. While in college Tracy co-founded the pop band Juicy in the mid-1990's with friend David Noble. Grammer discovered talents for mixing and arranging, and a love for recording, when the band went into the studio to put together its first and only demo.
Grammer saw Dave Carter perform at a songwriter showcase in February 1996, just weeks after she moved to Portland, Oregon. They met on the way out the door, and within weeks were working up material with a band. They began touring in late 1997 and during the summer of 1998, recorded their first album, WHEN I GO, in the kitchen of Grammer's apartment. Folk music authority Andrew Calhoun of Waterbug Records comments: "No one sings Dave Carter's songs better than Tracy. He chose her to be the voice of his songs. His vision, their vision, was that they shared something they both saw. She is half the reason why they were great."
Grammer is currently touring in support of FLOWER OF AVALON (Signature Sounds 2005), her much anticipated solo debut. In January 2006, that album showed up on "Best of" lists and listener polls around the country, and was the #1 most-played album on folk radio across the United States for 2005. We call this a triumph -- a testament to the enduring appeal of Carter's songwriting, and a sign of good things to come for Grammer as she continues on her solo career.

  Jim Henry
Henry's longtime reputation as a phenomenal all-around musician is well-deserved. He can do it all: play most things stringed, sing lead or harmony, write great songs, produce, engineer and arrange. Four solo recordings and literally hundreds of tracks on other people's recordings have cemented his position as one of the most versatile and talented musicians working in acoustic music today.
Fans first discovered Jim Henry in the Sundogs, an eclectic "swamp-boogie-swing" band that was one of New England's hottest touring club and dance hall bands in the late 80's/early 90's. In 1993, Henry released his debut solo disc, Into the Blue, whose title track garnered national praise and attracted the interest of the Massachusetts-based Signature Sounds Recordings, who signed him in 1995. That year, Henry released Jacksonville, which hit the upper reaches of the Gavin Americana chart and received significant airplay throughout the country.
In 1997, Jim joined with acoustic axe man and label-mate Brooks Williams to record Ring Some Changes, a soulful album of guitar duets which continues to be a favorite among fans. Never straying too far from his small-town roots, Henry released The Wayback in 1999, whose title track is an anthem to the importance of family. The disc, recorded live and unedited, features cream-of-the-crop players including Doug Plavin (Dar Williams, Bill Morrissey), Richard Gates (Patty Larkin, Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega) and Kevin Barry (Paula Cole, Mary Chapin Carpenter). Whether it's the slow burn of "Leaving Time" or the foot-stompin', drivin-too-fast cover of Carl Perkins' "Restless," the musicianship on this CD is fresh and jaw-droppingly good.
Henry is currently on tour with Tracy Grammer. When the Oregon-based Grammer needed an east coast accompanist for a fall 2003 tour, she put out the call and Jim Henry was the first name on the lips of people in the know. In only three days, Henry learned the lion's share of the Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer repertoire. Grammer and Henry's first show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, Mass. went so well they have been playing together ever since.
