Robert Ruby Fox, Playwright in Residence, has written both drama and comedy which reflect his deep understanding of people, their foibles and triumphs. Over the years, he has written such diverse pieces as Wednesdays with Hilda which addresses race relations and touches the heart with Jewish heritage and, Sophies Legacy, which takes an improbable look at creative pregnancy. Recently, Ruby and his work were the focus of the Actors Studio TV program, WAKE UP And LIVE with the ARTS where local actors read excerpts of his play, Date Mates. Ruby is also co-author, along with Gary Webster and Sue Johnson of Harlem Blues, a play about four female African-American actors in Harlem, which sprung from his fertile imagination. Ruby also was part of the writing team for Websters My Big Fat Dysfunctional Office which was commissioned by the Ohio Education Association. Currently, and for the past 6 years, Ruby has been leading a writers group that meets the first
and third Tuesday of every month at Borders Books at Severance Mall.
In 2005, Ruby celebrated his 80th birthday with a huge surprise birthday party given by his wife, Donna, and his family, where he saw his original one-act plays, Wednesdays with Hilda and Celibacy Odyssey performed at the Cleveland Playhouse. He has been featured twice in the Cleveland Jewish News as an elder person and playwright of distinction. The WAKE UP And LIVEs Actors Studio has dedicated its 2005-06 season of PlayActs to Ruby. In September, 2005, Ruby and Celibacy Odyssey headed to the Big Apple, where Celibacy Odyssey, a farcical fantasy romp, was performed off-Broadway at the Studio Theatre.
Ruby, a resident of University Heights, is considered a late bloomer. He chose the field of writing for live theatre, because of his admiration for live performances and their writers. He was in his late sixties when he began and discovered a hidden talent that he didnt realize he had. Since, he has written two movies, Shanghai Journey, and Murrows Children, which is now being considered for production. His plays have been read at the Cleveland Playhouse, Cuyahoga Community College and Ensemble Theatre, Cleveland, Ohio.
Gary Webster, Playwright in Residence, will have PlayActs Performances, 2006-07 dedicated to him in recognition of his extraordinary writing contributions to WAKE UP And LIVEs Actors Studio. Gary has been working with WAKE UP And LIVE since 1998. As a prolific sketch writer, he co-wrote Harlem Blues with Fox and Johnson, and was the head writer on My Big, Fat Dysfunctional Office, which was performed in Columbus, OH, before an appreciative group of members of the Ohio Education Association. His full-length play, Strictly Platonic? premiered as a stage reading in PlayActs Performances, 2007.
Gary has been writing plays since high school. The first he can remember was written in eleventh grade. It was titled "This Wasn't What I Had in Mind," and the topic was...surprise...relationships! He followed that up with parodies of several Shakespearian plays. Gary made his directorial debut, recently, with Saturday Confessions, A Priests Tale, which was performed at Cleveland Public Theater. Hes been a member of Foxs writing group for years. His playwright's training came via Bob Noll's class at the Cleveland Playhouse. Gary is the morning announcer and operations manager at WBKC/AM-1460 in Painesville, in addition to being a performer, essayist, and director. You can find more of Websters work at www.keepwriting.net.
