Folk Concert Celebrates
  Original Singer-Songwriter Movement

The group Long Road presents Can’t Help But Wonder Where I’m Bound: A 1967 Coffeehouse Concert, Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., at the Alma Theater in Cain Park (Lee and Superior roads, Cleveland Heights).

The concert is a fund-raiser for the non-profit music and educational organization Roots of American Music.

Long Road is: David Budin (guitar and vocals), Kevin Richards (guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and vocals), Julia Mell (vocals), Bob Sandham (guitar and vocals), and Raymond DeForest (upright bass and vocals). (See further personnel info below.)

In the middle and late 1960s, you could go to any folk club or coffeehouse in the country and hear performers singing all the same songs – songs by Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Tom Rush, Tim Hardin, Eric Andersen, Tim Buckley, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Phil Ochs, Bob Gibson, Ian & Sylvia, Steve Gillette and others.

But, for the most part, this music has not been played since around 1970 – partly because, as a result of this movement, most performers began writing their own songs, and also because new genres took over (folk-rock, psychedelic rock, electric blues, and others).

So there are dozens of wonderful songs that are not being played anymore. In this concert, Long Road performs the best of those late-‘60s songs, played with all acoustic instruments. There’s nothing you’ll hear that you would have heard after 1967. And there will be humor, along with some historical perspective on the music and the times.

All proceeds from this concert will benefit Roots of American Music. Please visit: www.rootsofamericanmusic.org.

  Tickets – $18; $20 day of show – are available at 216-371-3000 or www.cainpark.com.

  LONG ROAD consists of:

David Budin (guitar and vocals) – singer-songwriter, music arranger, record producer, rock and folk musician, and music journalist; formerly signed as a solo artist with Sire Records, and a member of an early E Street Band incarnation, the Gift.

Kevin Richards (guitar, mandolin and vocals) – veteran of many rock, folk and bluegrass groups; and founder and director of both the Fairmount School of Music and the locally based non-profit educational organization Roots of American Music.

Julia Mell (vocals) – sang for 10 years with the popular Cleveland group the Godot Quartet, which opened for such artists as Patty Larkin, John Gorka and Garnett Rogers.

Bob Sandham (guitar and vocals) – longtime folk, rock and country musician, who has played acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars with Alex Bevan, John Bassette, Pat Dailey and many others.

Raymond DeForest (upright bass and vocals) – master of electric and upright bass and every type of music, Ray has played with area bands including Blue Lunch, Mr. Stress, Aces & Eights and Princess Ladia.

Cain Park is produced by the City of Cleveland Heights.
