*The Play - "REFLECTIONS"
*This is a new Leiber and Stoller (Smokey Joe's Cafe) Musical Play, starring
New York Jazz Singer, Laura Theodore. The story is inspired by the life of
Peggy Lee. It takes us from her unhappy life on a farm in North Dakota to
her rise as a singing phenomenon to her later years of courage and
survival. The play, directed by Tom Fulton, uses the songs from the album
"Peggy Lee Sings Leiber and Stoller". It.is a memory play, peering into the
memories of Peggy using using multi-media, dance, music, singing and strong
acting scenes. There are 5 characters and several dance roles as follows:

*Child Peggy* (9-11) - a young girl around 10 years old. Her real mother
died when she was 4 years old and now there is an abusive stepmother in her
life, who resents the young girl for her beauty and quiet fortitude Child
Peggy loves the old music on the radio and longs to be a singing star.
This actor must be able to move well.

*Step Mother* (30-40) - a bitter woman who married late in life only to be
saddled with an alchoholic husband and his children. She especially resents
young Peggy and cannot control her rages against the young girl. Her
marriage has not turned out well and she is secretly fearful that respect
and acceptance by her family and the little farm community will never be
forthcoming. There is no music in this woman's life. The actor playing
this character will likely also play Sophie.

*Young Peggy (*17-24) The young Peggy that was discovered by Benny Goodman.
This actor has to resemble Peggy Lee as a young woman. She is eager, bold,
and convinced that her star will rise. She also has been hardened to
disappointment and ill fortune by her years as an abuse child, so she has
learned to be a survivor. She loves her father and carries forgiveness in
her heart for his absence... This actor must be able to dance.

*Dave Barbour* (35-50) - a genius with the jazz guitar. Smart, good looking
and in love with Peggy. When they marry and he falls victim to alchoholism
and depression. He fears that his own behavior will somehow ruin his family
- especially his beautiful daughter. At his insistence, they divorce, but
never loses his love and respect for Peggy. He goes into rehab and over 13
years becomes sober. For a moment in time, they both consider
re-marrying... This character has to cover a 15 year span. Dave needs to be
able to move well.

*Sophie *(40-50) - Peggy's older friend who comes to her aid after her
divorce and helps steer her on a new course. She's sassy, irreverent, funny
and sees the world combatively. She loves men. But she has no interest in
marrying. She wants to be free as a bird and her own person. Peggy is
often shocked by the things that come out of her mouth. But Sophie always
has a twinkle in her eye and one of her great talents is making Peggy laugh
by telling the truth. The actor playing this character will likely also
play Step Mother.

*Peggy's Father* (40-50) - A stoic man with a big heart. He is inarticulate
with words, but is capable of great acts of kindness. He is an alchoholic
and has essentially left his children in the hands of his second wife (Step
Mother). He doesn't see the extent of the abuse, or he is afraid to
acknowledge it... because he is lost without his first wife, who he loved.
He sees Peggy as a survivor and ultimately provides her with the means to
escape the horrors of her childhood.

*Dancers:* The dancers are part of the musical form of the play, which
takes place in the memory of Peggy 5 minutes before she goes on stage. The
perform a number of styles including Ballet, Disco, Circus Acts, Modern, and
creative movement routines that will be developed by Martin Cespedes.
