Violist and Music Educator Louise Zeitlin Named New Director
of the Oberlin Community Music School
OBERLIN, OHIO (August 1, 2007)=97Louise Zeitlin, a violist and music =20
educator who has been on the faculty of the Oberlin Community Music =20
School of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music since its inception in =20
2003, has been named the school=92s director. She began her new post on =20=
July 1, 2007.
Zeitlin=92s teaching career encompasses all ages and =20
levels, from young children to college music majors. Her former =20
students have attended some of America=92s finest music schools, =20
including the Juilliard School, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, =20
and Northwestern University. In addition to teaching children, she is =20=
lecturer in viola at Baldwin-Wallace College.
Zeitlin, who has studied with Heidi Castleman, Jesse =20
Levine, and the Tokyo Quartet, has held teaching positions at the =20
Cleveland Institute of Music, Carleton College, and the MacPhail =20
Center for the Arts, among others. During the summer, she teaches and =20=
performs at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. She is =20
principal viola with the Baldwin-Wallace College Bach Festival and =20
has played principal viola with the Brevard Music Center Orchestra. =20
Past orchestral performances include concerts with the Minnesota =20
Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Opera, the =20
Chicago String Ensemble, and the Chicago Opera Theatre.
She is a founding member and past president of the Ohio =20
Viola Society and is the secretary of the American Viola Society. She =20=
lives in Oberlin with her husband, James Howsmon, Professor of =20
Instrumental Accompanying at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and =20
their two children.
The Oberlin Conservatory of Music=92s Community Music School =
is =20
dedicated to providing students with an exceptional educational and =20
artistic experience while fostering a lifelong appreciation of and =20
commitment to excellence in music. The school offers students of all =20
ages, abilities, and backgrounds the opportunity to express their =20
artistic creativity through the study and creation of music; in =20
2004-05 the school enrolled approximately 75 students, and awarded =20
more than $4,000 in scholarship assistance. The Community Music =20
