Our regular readers know that I have quite a soft spot for locally owned
businesses. That spot grew even softer and larger when I heard how two
Canton business owners helped one of =93our own=94 this past weekend. A =
very
warm =93thank you=94 goes out to Maria at Arcadia Grille on Court Avenue =
NW in
downtown Canton and to Mike at Mr. Mike=92s Catering in Canton. These =
fine
folks came through in the 11th hour when Canton Cabaret Musical Dinner
Theatre had nearly become a =93Dinnerless Theatre!=94 I=92ll save the =
details for
CCMDT=92s executive director, Lois DiGiacomo, to share with us at a =
later
date. I=92ve expressed my hope that she will use her abundance of energy =
and
writing skills to share with us the story of how last weekend unfolded, =
and
how a few people were strategically placed, blessed with resources, and =
were
willing to help and share at a moment=92s notice. I can=92t wait to see =
it in
print, to remind me once again of how glad I am that my roots are firmly
grounded in Stark County soil.=20

On that note, there are several benefits happening soon for some of =
Canton=92s
finest friends who are battling cancer. More info will be included in

Meanwhile, may each of us be in the right place with the right stuff and =

Scott Posey, an experienced director, actor, dancer and singer will be
teaching musical theatre classes. He has performed on stages at =
colleges,
universities, community centers and other venues. He has performed in =
dozens
of productions such as =93Jesus Christ Superstar,=94 =93Brigadoon,=94 =
and =93Little
Shop of Horrors.=94  Classes are offered on the last day of the two-week
Workshop II at The Turning Pointe. Students not enrolled in Workshop II =
are
welcome to sign up for the musical theatre workshop. Classes are $20 per
student and the advanced class is $25 per student. Advanced musical =
theatre
students should bring prepared song with music, and also a prepared
monologue if they have one. All students are welcome to bring prepared

Posey, who has a bachelor=92s degree in musical theatre and master=92s =
degree in
advanced acting, also has directed dozens of productions. He directed =

Mikado=94 and =93Pirates of Penzance=94 for Cleveland Opera on Tour, for =
which he

A note from Ryan Humbert: Locally owned and operated Jimmy's Cafe will =
host
a music festival / benefit concert on Sunday, August 19th 2007 to help =
keep
its doors open. Jimmy's Cafe has been a haven for local music ever since
they opened their doors. The festival will take place indoors and =
outdoors.,
Jimmy's Cafe will feature a special menu of their unique southern =
cuisine
for this indoor/outdoor event. Jimmy's encourages patrons to bring their =
own
blankets and lawn chairs for the show. All the bands in the lineup have
volunteered their time to play this special benefit concert.

Jimmy's namesake, Jimmy Van Hoose, whose artwork covers the walls of the
quaint cafe, has donated pieces of his custom artwork for a special =
silent
auction. Due to rising costs and outstanding taxes Jimmy's Cafe was =
forced
to close its doors at the beginning of June. Says owner Carla Jarvis " =
(I
was) bombarded with customers and friends calling and literally beating =
on
the door begging us to stay open, and offering help and friendship." =
After
much consideration, Jarvis decided it wasn't time to give up on Cuyahoga
Falls' best kept secret.=20

The heart and soul of Jimmy's Cafe began more than five years ago with a
brush stroke by Jimmy Van Hoose, who started the cafe. With the support =
of
customers and friends who will attend the concert, all proceeds will go
towards helping Jimmy's Cafe get back on their feet again and moving
forward. Jimmy's plans to utilize the funds generated to ensure that the =
art
and atmosphere at Jimmy's will continue for many years to come.

Jimmy's Cafe isn't just a place to go to get a good meal; it's an
experience. Come and enjoy Jimmy's art, the photographs on the walls, =
the
outgoing people who serve you and the talented musicians who regularly
perform. It's about the love that Jimmy's Cafe has been home to for over

Nancy Stewart Matin is a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor =
Society,
and her work resides in the permanent collections of several Stark =
County
institutions including the Massillon Museum, North Canton Library, and =
the
Canton Museum of Art, where she serves on the board of trustees.  A
self-taught artist, she has developed an affinity for =B3the pour=B2 =
technique,
a process by which watercolor paint is mixed thinly with water and then
poured through various filters.  Her paintings are never without a =
story=8Bthe
story, she says, tends to find her as she waits for the paper to =
surprise
her. =20
Brian Robinson, a Perry High School graduate who teaches art at Tuslaw =
High
School, is a resident of Dover, Ohio.  He holds a bachelor of science =
degree
from The University of Akron and a masters degree in painting from Kent
State University.  He was among the nine select artists included in the
Museum's landscape exhibition, "Untrodden Paths."  Robinson's landscape
paintings have garnered awards in the Massillon Museum's Stark County
Artists Exhibition,the North Canton Art Gallery's May Show, "Art Along =
the
Path" in North Canton, the Alliance Art Center's Art Fest, and the Zoar
Harvest Festival, and he has been a featured artist at the Gallery in =
the
Vault in Wooster, Ohio.

If you are an artist or know an artist who has some connection to Stark
County and would love the exposure of his/her work to 2,500 people =

reading. Each month (from September through June), ArtsInStark sends out =
the
SuperPass postcard to donors who have pledged $36 or more during the AIS
annual fund drive.=20

The cover of the card features the work of a Stark County (born, =
working,
living) artist, while the back features the monthly discounts and a =
short
(75 words or less) bio and contact info of the artist. AIS has used work =
by
professional artists and students. The art needs to be saved in 300 dpi
resolution as a pdf file; jpeg, etc.  The size is basically 5=94 x 7=94;
horizontal or vertical image will work. If you or someone you know wants =
to
be on the upcoming cards =85.please have them (or you) contact Judi =

Call for Visual Artists: The Stark County Story Quilts Project

Exhibit Opens January 18th, 2008 to February 15th, 2008. at 2nd April
galerie, downtown Canton. The Stark County Story Quilts Project will be =
an
adaptation of the works of renowned artist Faith Ringgold. In a series =
of
workshops held throughout Stark County and at our educational space
downtown, participants will learn about the life and works of Faith
Ringgold, an African American artist and author who produced much of her
work during the Civil Rights Movement. From this perspective, workshop
participants will then be asked to produce both a written and visual =
history
of their experiences in Stark County before, during and after The Civil
Rights Movement, using Faith Ringgold's "Story Quilts" as a model. Upon
completion, these "Stark County Story Quilts" will then be assembled at =
our
special exhibition space in Downtown Canton to then be used as a =
learning
tool for school groups, civic groups and other organizations. Quilt =
panels
will consist of both the literary and visual elements of each personal
history and will be assembled in time periods based on the age of the
participant, creating a timeline effect for the exhibit. The ultimate =
goal
of this project is to create a permanent history of our community both
created by and witnessed by its citizens through the vocabulary of Art. =

Midwest Visions of Impressionism Exhibit

This summer exhibition will illustrate the significance of 33 talented
painters who are often overlooked in larger American Impressionism =
surveys.
The exhibition will focus on the similarities and differences among =
artists
associated with the region of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, as well as =
within
the larger American Impressionism movement. It will examine whether or =
not
the region in which the artists lived and studied had a noticeable =
effect on
their paintings.
The exhibition of approximately 70 paintings highlights artists, born or
raised in the Midwest, who practiced American Impressionism from =
the1890s to
the 1930s: John Ottis Adams, George Adomeit, George Ames Aldrich, May =
Ames,
Otto H. Bacher, L. Clarence Ball, Karl Albert Buehr, V.J. Cariani, =
William
Merritt Chase, William Clusmann, Charles Dahlgreen, Frank Virgil Dudley,

Midwest Visions of Impressionism Exhibit

The Massillon Museum=B9s new second-floor exhibition, =B3The New Face of
Watercolor:  A Conversation with the Past,=B2 matches ten works of art =
from
the Museum=B9s permanent collection with ten contemporary watercolor =
paintings
by Nancy Stewart Matin.  The exhibition is now open and will continue
through October of this year.=20

Nancy Stewart Matin, a North Canton resident, is a signature member of =
the
Ohio Watercolor Society, and her work resides in the permanent =
collections
of several Stark County institutions including the Massillon Museum, =
North
Canton Library, and the Canton Museum of Art, where she serves on the =
board
of trustees. =20

The artist participated in the Massillon Museum=B9s =B3Adaptations=B2 =
exhibition
in 2006.  She will demonstrate her painting technique at the Museum on
Sunday, August 19, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., in conjunction with the
closing of the =B3Midwestern Visions of Impressionism: 1890=AD1930=B2 =
exhibition.
A $5 admission fee to the painting demonstrations (also featuring Brian
Robinson) will entitle guests to an opportunity to win a painting.

A self-taught artist, Nancy Stewart Matin uses a "pour=B2 technique, a =
process
by which watercolor paint is mixed thinly with water and then poured =
through
various filters. =20

=B3Watercolor has come a long way since days gone by,=B2 says Matin.  =
=B3It was
considered a study=8Bfor serious painting to be created in oils, of =
course.=B2
She explains that artists are no longer purists, using only transparent
watercolor paints.  =B3We now paint in =8Cwater media,=B9 also employing =
gouache
(an opaque watercolor paint) and acrylic (whose origin is plastic.=B2  =
She
says this takes nothing from the art of the past.  =B3We are what we are
because of what came before us.  We have simply chosen another
path=8Bflinging, pouring, freeing ourselves and our paint.=B2

=B3The New Face of Watercolor=B2 may be seen during regular Museum hours
Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 2:00 =

Exhibition: "Ohio Watermedia Invitational; New Impressions"

Peninsula Art Academy Gallery, 1600 West Mill Street  PO Box 171, =

This event is open to the public. This invitational exhibit features =
twenty
northeast Ohio artists, who specialize in working in watermedia. Various
directions of creativity, using watermedia, is the theme of the exhibit.
Watermedia includes transparent watercolor, gouache, egg tempera and =
acrylic
wash works. Brushstroke acrylics and watersoluble oils were not =
eligible
for consideration. All paintings are for sale with 30% going to support
Peninsula Art Academy, a 501c(3) promoting advancement of the arts in

that I have
quite a soft spot for locally owned businesses. That spot grew even =
softer and
larger when I heard how two Canton business owners helped one of =93our =
own=94 this
past weekend. A very warm =93thank you=94 goes out to Maria at Arcadia Grille on Court Avenue NW in downtown =
Canton
and to Mike at Mr. Mike=92s =
Catering
in Canton. These fine folks came through in the 11th hour =
when
Canton Cabaret Musical Dinner Theatre had nearly become a =93Dinnerless =
Theatre!=94
I=92ll save the details for CCMDT=92s executive director, Lois DiGiacomo, to share with us =
at a later
date. I=92ve expressed my hope that she will use her abundance of energy =
and
writing skills to share with us the story of how last weekend unfolded, =
and how
a few people were strategically placed, blessed with resources, and were
willing to help and share at a moment=92s notice. I can=92t wait to see =
it in print,
to remind me once again of how glad I am that my roots are firmly =
grounded in Stark
County soil.

On that note, there are =
several
benefits happening soon for some of Canton=92s finest friends who are =
battling
cancer. More info will be included in Sunday=92s edition. =

A note from Ryan Humbert: Locally owned and operated =
Jimmy's
Cafe will host a music festival / benefit concert on Sunday, August 19th =

to help keep its doors open. Jimmy's Cafe has been a haven for =
local music
ever since they opened their doors. The festival will take place indoors =
and outdoors.,
Jimmy's Cafe will feature a special menu of their unique southern =
cuisine for
this indoor/outdoor event. Jimmy's encourages patrons to bring their own
blankets and lawn chairs for the show. All the bands in the lineup have
volunteered their time to play this special benefit =
concert.

Jimmy's namesake, Jimmy Van Hoose, whose artwork =
covers the
walls of the quaint cafe, has donated pieces of his custom artwork for a
special silent auction. Due to rising costs and outstanding taxes =
Jimmy's Cafe
was forced to close its doors at the beginning of June. Says owner Carla =
Jarvis
" (I was) bombarded with customers and friends calling and =
literally
beating on the door begging us to stay open, and offering help and
friendship." After much consideration, Jarvis decided it wasn't =
time to
give up on Cuyahoga Falls' best kept secret.

The heart and soul of Jimmy's Cafe began more than =
five
years ago with a brush stroke by Jimmy Van Hoose, who started the cafe. =
With
the support of customers and friends who will attend the concert, all =
proceeds
will go towards helping Jimmy's Cafe get back on their feet again and =
moving
forward. Jimmy's plans to utilize the funds generated to ensure that the =
art
and atmosphere at Jimmy's will continue for many years to =
come.

Jimmy's Cafe isn't just a place to go to get a good =
meal; it's

Nancy Stewart Matin is a
signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, and her work resides in =
the
permanent collections of several Stark County institutions including the
Massillon Museum, North Canton Library, and the Canton Museum of Art, =
where she
serves on the board of trustees.  A self-taught artist, she has =
developed
an affinity for =B3the pour=B2 technique, a process by which watercolor =
paint is
mixed thinly with water and then poured through various filters. =
 Her
paintings are never without a story=8Bthe story, she says, tends to find =
her as
she waits for the paper to surprise her.   
Brian
Robinson, a Perry High School graduate who teaches =
art at
Tuslaw High School, is a resident of Dover, Ohio.  He holds a =
bachelor of
science degree from The University of Akron and a =
masters
degree in painting from Kent State University.  He was among the =
nine
select artists included in the Museum's landscape exhibition, =
"Untrodden Paths."
 Robinson's landscape paintings have garnered awards in the =
Massillon
Museum's Stark County Artists Exhibition,the North Canton Art Gallery's =
May
Show, "Art Along the Path" =
in North
Canton, the Alliance Art Center's Art Fest, and the Zoar Harvest =
Festival, and

educational space downtown, participants will learn about the life and =

Faith Ringgold, an African American artist and author who produced much =

work during the Civil Rights Movement. From this perspective, workshop
participants will then be asked to produce both a written and visual =
history of
their experiences in Stark County before, during and after The Civil =
Rights
Movement, using Faith Ringgold's "Story Quilts" as a model. =
Upon
completion, these "Stark County Story Quilts" will then be =
assembled
at our special exhibition space in Downtown Canton to then be used as a
learning tool for school groups, civic groups and other organizations. =
Quilt
panels will consist of both the literary and visual elements of each =
personal
history and will be assembled in time periods based on the age of the
participant, creating a timeline effect for the exhibit. The ultimate =
goal of
this project is to create a permanent history of our community both =

This summer exhibition will illustrate the =
significance of
33 talented painters who are often overlooked in larger American =
Impressionism
surveys. The exhibition will focus on the similarities and =
differences
among artists associated with the region of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, =

as within the larger American Impressionism movement.  It will =
examine
whether or not the region in which the artists lived and studied had a
noticeable effect on their paintings. 
The exhibition of approximately 70 paintings highlights artists, born or =

in the Midwest, who practiced American Impressionism from the1890s to =

The Massillon Museum=B9s new second-floor exhibition, =
=B3The New
Face of Watercolor:  A Conversation with the Past,=B2 matches ten =
works of
art from the Museum=B9s permanent collection with ten contemporary =
watercolor
paintings by Nancy Stewart Matin.  The =
exhibition
is now open and will continue through October of this year. 
 
Nancy Stewart Matin, a North Canton resident, is a =
signature
member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, and her work resides in the =
permanent
collections of several Stark County institutions including the Massillon
Museum, North Canton Library, and the Canton Museum of Art, where she =
serves on
the board of trustees.   
 
The artist participated in the Massillon Museum=B9s =B3Adaptations=B2 =
exhibition in
2006.  She will demonstrate her painting technique at the Museum on
Sunday, August 19, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., in conjunction with the =
closing
of the =B3Midwestern Visions of Impressionism: 1890=AD1930=B2 =
exhibition.  A $5
admission fee to the painting demonstrations (also featuring Brian =
Robinson)
will entitle guests to an opportunity to win a painting. 
 
A self-taught artist, Nancy Stewart =
Matin uses
a "pour=B2 technique, a process by which watercolor paint is mixed =
thinly
with water and then poured through various filters.   
 
=B3Watercolor has come a long way since days gone by,=B2 says Matin. =
 =B3It was
considered a study=8Bfor serious painting to be created in oils, of =
course.=B2
 She explains that artists are no longer purists, using only =
transparent
watercolor paints.  =B3We now paint in =8Cwater media,=B9 also =
employing gouache
(an opaque watercolor paint) and acrylic (whose origin is plastic.=B2 =
 She
says this takes nothing from the art of the past.  =B3We are what =
we are
because of what came before us.  We have simply chosen another =
path=8Bflinging,
pouring, freeing ourselves and our paint.=B2
