FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Oberlin Conservatory of Music Launches
Master of Music Teaching Degree

Five-Year Program Addresses Needs=96and Passions=97of Millennial =
Generation

OBERLIN, OHIO (September 17, 2007)=97With its history of innovation and =20=

excellence in music education as its lodestar, the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College is again leading the way, =20
redefining music education for the 21st century with a new Master of =20
Music Teaching (MMT) program.

Oberlin=92s MMT program reflects the interests of the =20
millennial generation: the desire to pursue a performance career, a =20
dedication to investing in and improving local communities, and a =20
passion for spreading the joy of music through teaching.
=93Our new MMT program will take students on an intensive, five-year =20
journey towards a master=92s degree, and will serve as a model of =20
education nationwide through its emphasis on creating rigorous =20
standards in performance and pedagogy,=94 says Dean of the Conservatory =20=

David H. Stull. =93Most important, the MMT speaks to a new generation =20=

of students who seek a greater involvement in their communities as =20
educators and advocates for music.=94

Oberlin=92s Master of Music Teaching program offers =20
students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Music degree in =20
performance, a Master=92s degree in music teaching, and state-approved =20=

teaching certification=97all within five years. Equally appealing, once =20=

students have completed their course work and pass the state-required =20=

PRAXIS II Principles of Teaching and Learning and Music Content Area =20
exams, they are eligible to apply for an Ohio teaching license. =20
Because Ohio has full reciprocity with each of the other 49 states in =20=

the country with regard to teaching licensure, MMT graduates will be =20
able to teach Pre-Kindergarten-12 (general, choral, and instrumental) =20=

music anywhere in the United States.
Taken over the course of 14 months=97two summers and an academic year=97=20=

the MMT degree is offered in one of two categories: instrumental or =20
choral/vocal. The master=92s component of the curriculum builds on the =20=

rigorous musical foundation of an undergraduate performance-degree =20
program. Because of Ohio licensure criteria, MMT students will =20
receive vocal/choral and instrumental pedagogical training at the pre-=20=

school, elementary school, middle school, and high-school levels.

Master of Music Teaching: a National Prototype
=93Oberlin is unique in the field of music education: we are the only =20=

top-ranking liberal arts college in the U.S. with a world-renowned =20
conservatory,=94 says Stull. =93Our heritage is built on =91firsts=92. =
We are =20
singularly equipped to redefine music education for the 21st century. =94

Founded in 1865, Oberlin is the oldest continuously =20
operating conservatory in the United States. America=92s first four-=20
year degree program in music education was established at Oberlin, in =20=

1921, and, in 1958, Oberlin was the first to introduce to the U.S. =20
the Suzuki method of musical instruction. In China, Oberlin=92s =20
influence is evident at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the =20
oldest conservatory in China. Huang Tzu, a 1926 Oberlin graduate who =20
is widely considered to be one of the patriarchs of Western music =20
education in modern China, was one of the founding fathers of the =20
Shanghai Conservatory. He wrote the school=92s curriculum, which =20
ultimately became the platform for the professional study of music in =20=

China.

The Changing Landscape of Pre-K-12 Education:
Community and Private Schools
Dean Stull and members of Oberlin=92s music education faculty reviewed =20=

the Conservatory=92s music education curriculum in relation to the =20
changing landscape of K-12 education. =93In the era of =91No Child Left =20=

Behind=92 and shrinking budgets, public school districts are all too =20
often forced to siphon money away from the arts to raise test scores =20
in subjects deemed =91core,=92=94 says the Conservatory=92s Associate =
Dean =20
for Academic Affairs Andrea Kalyn. She points to U.S. Department of =20
Education research which suggests that, concurrent with these fiscal =20
challenges, the demand among parents for alternatives and enriched =20
educational experiences has grown. =93Charter schools, private schools, =20=

and community music schools can be more flexible in terms of =20
curriculum and hiring,=94 she says. =93Recent statistics indicate that =20=

fewer than half of private-school teachers hold teaching =20
certification, which affirms our understanding that many liberal arts =20=

and conservatory graduates who lack formalized pedagogical training =20
are put in the undesirable position of developing their teaching =20
skills on the job.=94

At the same time, certified teachers working within =20
public school systems are under increasing pressure to obtain =20
master=92s degrees within just a few years of starting their teaching =20=

careers. =93The new master=92s program will allow bright and talented =20=

musicians to explore musical education at a point when they are =20
mature enough to know what they want to do in their professional =20
lives,=94 says Marci Alegant, Associate Dean for Student Academic =
Affairs.

Learning and Labor in Real Life
Living up to Oberlin College=92s motto, =93Learning and Labor,=94 the =20=

Oberlin Conservatory has formulated the Master of Music Teaching =20
program to include real-life experience in the community. The Music =20
Education Division will continue its unique tradition of placing =20
teacher candidates in diverse instructional settings=97rural, suburban, =20=

and urban, public schools, and community music schools=97to practice =20
their skills and implement theories encountered in music education =20
methods courses. Prior to completing the MMT, the candidates will =20
observe and do their practice teaching in Pre-Kindergarten-12 public =20
schools in Lorain and Cuyahoga Counties as well as in the Oberlin =20
Conservatory of Music=92s Community Music School, a Pre-Kindergarten =20
through adulthood pre-collegiate music instruction program. In =20
addition, music methods courses in the MMT program will also continue =20=

offering peer-teaching opportunities, during which teacher candidates =20=

teach and observe their peers teaching. =93The MMT program is an =20
enriching, multi-level teaching experience that reflects Oberlin=92s =20
commitment to community engagement and life-long learning,=94 says Jody =20=

Kerchner, Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Music =20
Education. =93The program affirms the importance of teacher training in =20=

the U.S., and, perhaps most important, it fosters a vital =20
collaboration between academia and the nation=92s public and =20
alternative school systems,=94 she adds.

A Case Study
Perhaps the most compelling rationale for Oberlin=92s MMT degree comes =20=

from the students themselves. Conservatory student Chloe Robinson, =20
who will earn a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance in =20
2008, is enthusiastic about applying for the MMT. =93My playing ability =20=

has greatly benefited from my education at Oberlin. Now that I=92ve =20
honed my violin skills, I would like to continue as a master=92s =20
student, then teach and pass along my skills and love of music to =20
children,=94 she says. Robinson, whose parents are both educators, =20
comments, =93What=92s so
cool about the MMT program is that it gets me to where I want to be =20
without the usual extended period of time for a master=92s. I will =20
always want to perform, but I also want to teach. The master=92s =20
program will give me a sense of financial security to be able to do =20
both.=94

             In 2006, the Conservatory piloted a =94Music Workshop=94 =20=

class with the cooperation of Langston Middle School in the Oberlin =20
Public School system. The Conservatory provided guitars and =20
keyboards, as well as expertise from faculty, like Professor =20
Kerchner, to help structure and teach the class. =93It was a superb =20
collaboration. It brought the Conservatory=92s many talents and assets =20=

to our school, which ultimately will enhance our community in the =20
future,=94 says Scott Wagner, who is Music Workshop Instructor at =20
Langston, as well as Community Education Assistant at the =20
Conservatory. The Oberlin Public School system and the Conservatory =20
will continue their collaboration this year, and the model will =20
benefit MMT students who will do portions of their practice teaching =20
throughout Lorain and Cuyahoga counties. Wagner believes that the MMT =20=

program will truly help teacher-candidates: =93You can read all you =20
want about teaching, but real-life experience in the classroom will =20
be the most valuable part of these students=92 education. What makes =20
this program terrific for my kids is that Oberlin Conservatory =20
students are international. It is important to learn about music in =20
India, for instance, but it is also important to know what the people =20=

and culture are like there. That is a totally unique and valuable =20
resource that only the Oberlin Conservatory of Music can bring to our =20=

school,=94 he says.

A trumpet player and guitarist, Wagner ends by offering =20
some words of wisdom: =93What does music do for our children? It =20
provides a creative outlet for many; for others, it is a life-saver. =20
It helps kids with self-esteem issues because they are enjoying =20
themselves in the classroom. Music is a life-changing and life-=20
enhancing influence in their lives.=94

To Apply for the MMT Program
The Music Education Program at Oberlin is committed to a curriculum =20
that develops artists as teachers; Oberlin=92s MMT program is, =20
therefore, ideal for current undergraduate music students and those =20
already engaged in performance careers; third- or fourth-year =20
performance, jazz studies, TIMARA (Technology in Music and the =20
Related Arts), music history, and composition majors in the =20
Conservatory; Oberlin alumni, or graduates of other institutions, who =20=

have earned a Bachelor of Music degree in performance and who wish to =20=

teach in public, private, or community music schools; and prospective =20=

high school students, who must apply to and enroll in the =20
Conservatory as a performance, jazz studies, TIMARA, music history, =20
or composition major.

The deadline to apply for acceptance to the MMT degree =20
program is December 1, 2007; classes begin in June of 2008. For more =20
