Amahl and the Night Visitors is a short opera
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opera> in one act by Gian Carlo Menotti
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gian_Carlo_Menotti> on an original
English libretto <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libretto> by the
composer <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composer> . It was first
performed on Christmas Eve, <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_24>
1951 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1951> in New York City
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City> , AND it was broadcast on
television <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television> . It was the first
opera specifically composed for television in America, and is now a
popular Christmas <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas> classic.
Menotti, an Italian American composer, died this past February.

Plot synopsis: Amahl is a crippled boy living with his mom in poverty
in first century Palestine. Aside from the crippled leg, Amahl is a
playful, loving young son, who plays a musical pipe he made himself, and
tells really big "stories". In the middle of the night, when Mother and
Amahl are asleep, Three Kings arrive at their door looking for a place
to get some sleep for the night. Amahl and Mother invite the guests in,
with all their finery and the gifts for the Child they seek. With true
Middle Eastern hospitality, the neighbors come to greet the guests, and
bring gifts from their own harvest. There is dancing and much
merriment.

=20

Finally the Kings and Amahl are able to settle down to sleep, but the
Mother is overwhelmed by the riches the Kings have brought with them.
"If I take some, they'll never miss it", she says to herself. Just as
she reaches to steal just a little piece, the Kings' page catches her,
and the whole household wakes up as the two fight over the little piece.

=20

The Kings stop the fight, and tell the Mother she can keep the gold -
the Child they seek doesn't need it. Mother asks them to take back the
gold, as she, too has been waiting and watching for the Child King.
Amahl offers his only possession of value as a gift, his crutch, and as
he holds it out, he accidentally steps on his lame foot - and is
miraculously healed
