The Cleveland State University Dramatic Arts Program presents.

The Birthday Party

By Harold Pinter

Directed by Allan Byrne

Fifty years ago Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter began writing plays. To
mark this anniversary Cleveland State University's Department of Theatre
will present Pinter's first full length play The Birthday Party. This
fascinating play combines all the elements that have made Pinter one of the
giants of 20th century theatre: intriguing mystery, hilarious dark comedy
that suddenly turns terrifying, deeply layered characters that are both
absurd and moving, an incredible ear for the music of every day speech, and
thought provoking stories that have a unique compulsive power. Director
Allan Byrne says of the play "It's as if Quentin Tarantino, Samuel Beckett
and Monty Python's Flying Circus all got together." In the play, a
dilapidated boarding house becomes the scene of a ritual murder in which all
of the inhabitants play roles that reflect our society. The CSU Dramatic
Arts Program has invited many local scholars and critics to take part in
post show discussions on the works of Harold Pinter.
