Dancing Wheels
"Helen Keller: A Tribute to her Teacher" and Other Rep

For the first part of this program, the Company will perform repertory pieces that have been created for them by Choreographers David Rousseve (an excerpt from his Walking on Clouds piece, which will feature a sign language interpretation demonstration by Mark Howdieshell) and Mark Tomasic (A wing/a prayer). The second part of the evening concert, the company will perform: "Helen Keller: A Tribute To Her Teacher." "Helen Keller..." is first and foremost the story of a brave woman told through dance, but really becomes a grand celebration of two females. They live their lives to the fullest in a society new to the experience of a deaf/blind person engaging in everyday activities. As Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, journeyed through life together, they unveiled great discoveries in the world. The experiences they shared opened the hearts and minds of thousands to the endless possibilities available to those who hunger to live life to the fullest. Come celebrate the inspiring lives of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in this compelling and thought-provoking ballet choreographed by Christopher Fleming. Based in Cleveland, the Dancing Wheels Company, under the artistic direction of Mary Verdi-Fletcher, is the first professional physically integrated dance company in America. Company members are individuals with and without disabilities who are trained as professional dancers. http://www.dancingwheels.org/ (Presented with support from the LCCC Foundation). Tickets: $15.00/Adults; $10.00/Children 12 and under

If you can't make it to the evening performance, Dancing Wheels will be doing two Student Matinee performances of "Helen Keller: A Tribute to her Teacher" at 9:45am and 11:45am on Friday, October 19th. These 1-hour performances are open to the public and include only the "Helen Keller" piece. Tickets for the Student Matinee performances are $4.00/each and are available at the door that morning.

The evening performance of "Helen Keller..." qualifies for our new "Take A Chance" program - which means that ½ price tickets (off of the Adult ticket price) - will be available at the Box Office beginning at 6:00pm the evening of the performance!

(NEXT DANCE EVENT LIVE ON STAGE AT STOCKER: AILEY II on Monday, November 5, 2007 at 7:30pm! Tickets are available.)

THE RAPE OF EUROPA
2006 (Unrated) Documentary 117 min. USA
Director: Richard Berge, Nicole Newnham, Bonni Cohen
Cast: Narrated by Joan Allen

THE RAPE OF EUROPA tells the epic story of the systematic theft, deliberate destruction and miraculous survival of Europe's art treasures during the Third Reich and World War ll. In a journey through seven countries, the film takes the audience into the violent whirlwind of fanaticism, greed, and warfare that threatened to wipe out the artistic heritage of Europe. For twelve long years the Nazis looted and destroyed art on a scale unprecedented in history. But heroic young art historians and curators from America and across Europe fought back with a miraculous campaign to rescue and return the millions of lost, hidden and stolen treasures. Bringing a radically new perspective to World War ll and the Holocaust, this fast-paced documentary, based on Lynn Nicholas' bestseller about the fate of European art both under the Nazis and afterward, casts the Third Reich in a wholly different light. Curiously, by narrowing the focus, filmmakers widen the absurdity and horror of a war waged, at least in part, for a monstrously inflated private agenda.

"A mesmerizing morality play rich in rare archival footage and complete with heroic Allied saviors..." - Ronnie Scheib, VARIETY

"EUROPA tells in breathtaking detail the epic story of the Nazi's systematic plunder of European art..." - VILLAGE VOICE
