A SHAYNA MAIDEL and SeVeN this week
An excerpt from choreographer Linda Kahn¹s dance-theater work SeVeN will be
presented before two performances of The Mandel Jewish Community Center
production of A Shayna Maidel: Thursday, October 18 at 7 pm and Sunday,
October 21 at 1:30 pm. SeVeN was inspired by the moving stories of
Holocaust survivors Gerda Weissman Klein and Renee Firestone.

And at the Sunday matinees, there will be pre-performance talks by local
scholars and Holocaust education specialists who will illuminate issues
relating to the resettlement of Jewish Holocaust survivors after World War
II: Alan T. Levenson, Professor of History at the Laura and Alvin Siegal
College of Judaic Studies will speak this Sunday, October 21 at 1 pm.

Literally translated as ³a pretty girl,² A Shayna Maidel conveys the
aftermath of the Holocaust through a poignant, imaginatively conceived
examination of one divided family's experience. Two sisters separated in
childhood‹one raised in America, the other in Poland‹are reunited in New
York City in 1946 in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust. After a
15-year separation and the loss of most family members, they are nearly
strangers and struggle to reconnect. A Shayna Maidel by Barbara Lebow was
the first winner of The Mandel Jewish Community Center¹s Dorothy Silver
Playwriting Competition.
