DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Center Theatre Group
Position Description
TITLE: Director of Education and Outreach
CENTER THEATRE GROUP:
Center Theatre Group (CTG) is Los Angeles' preeminent nonprofit theatre company. On its three stages
- the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre - CTG presents the
highest quality and broadest range of theatre possible: groundbreaking new works, explosive
productions of the classics and Broadway plays and musicals.
In the past two years alone, a total of 37 productions were presented, including 12 world premieres. Of
these, 5 have been or are scheduled to be presented in New York, including 2 musicals which received a
total of 21 Tony AwardR nominations (more than any other theatre company outside of New York).
Twenty of those productions were offered to students through P.L.A.Y. (Performing for Los Angeles
Youth) programs.
The same high standards that are applied to its stages extend to CTG's education programs. Through
performances for students, residencies at schools, discount tickets, and educational materials, CTG
reaches each year over 30,000 young people who would not otherwise experience professional theatre.
As part of CTG's mission, the New Play Production Program is designed to foster the development and
production of new work, from artists within the diverse communities of Los Angeles as well as from
across the nation and abroad. Through this program, CTG commissions new plays, musicals and other
theatrical projects; partners with smaller Los Angeles theatre companies to present their work; develops
theatrical works; collaborates with other producers to share expenses and ensure the future life of the
projects; and supports artists in residence.
CTG's Mission
To serve diverse audiences by producing and presenting theatre of the highest caliber, by nurturing new
artists, by attracting new audiences, and by developing youth outreach and arts education programs.
This mission is based on a belief that the art of theatre is a cultural force with the capacity to transform
the lives of individuals and society at large.
Performing for Los Angeles Youth Program (P.L.A.Y.)/Education Program:
P.L.A.Y., which was established in 1971, is CTG's award-winning youth theatre and education program
that reaches over 30,000 young people annually. P.L.A.Y. tours Southern California elementary schools
with original plays, brings middle school and high school students to see mainstage shows in all three

theatres, conducts intense, in-school residencies, and provides easy-to-use website guides for each CTG
play.
CTG's new Artistic Director, Michael Ritchie, has introduced a change to the programming of P.L.A.Y.,
focusing on bringing students to mainstage productions rather than producing plays aimed exclusively
towards children. In shifting the department away from production and more towards education, CTG
hopes to focus on broadening the definition of education to include adult audiences as well as children
and students.
CTG's educational strategic priorities include a commitment to:
. Integrate young people and families in the overall programming of the CTG as well as
community outreach
. Create long-term strategic partnerships with schools, community organizations and families to
encourage and increase theatre-going through education, participation and accessibility
. Teach skills and curriculum through the art and literature of theatre
. Assess and evaluate the results of its programming
