(Link includes cover art and a link to table of contents)
This book “situates Aristophanic comedy in the context of competitive
reperformance culture in fifth- and fourth-century Greece. It seeks of
illuminate how the dazzling busyness of Aristophanic comedy is the
creation of a carefully manipulating craftsman trying to out do his
rivals in the fierce competition of the dramatic festivals. Informed by
theatre semiotics and frame-based models of conceptualizing the
theatrical event, the book analyses in a number of case studies how
theatrical resources of all kinds are utilized in order to generate
theatrical meaning as well as capture and sustain audience interest.
Martin Revermann's approach therefore combines philological analysis
with methodologies developed in Theatre Studies. Special attention is
given to the visual dimension of theatrical communication. Material
from comparator traditions is brought to bear, as is the evidence of
the pictorial record." – from book jacket

“When England's theaters reopened in 1660, eighteen years after being
closed by an act of Parliament, audiences embraced the witty and
satirical dialogue spoken by "plain folks" characters-it was a new era

collection are typical of the works popularized during one of the most
exciting and innovative periods in English theater.” – from book jacket
