Actors’ Summit Theater
Offers “Pay What You Can” Tickets
for final Medea Performances
Actors’ Summit, a Professional Theater, located in historic downtown
Hudson, is pleased to announce a special offering of discounted tickets for its
current, critically acclaimed production of the classic Greek tragedy, Medea.
“We’ve had a great response to our student matinees this week, “commented
Neil Thackaberry, the production’s director. “We want to make this
performance accessible for high school and college students. Classic Greek tragedies
are rarely performed locally by professional theaters.”
About The Play
First produced in 431 B.C.E., this remarkable work of art has held the stage
for nearly two and a half millennia. Euripides, the author, is one member of
the trio of great Greek classical playwrights (the others being Aeschylus
and Sophocles.)
The play is based on the myth of Jason and Medea. Jason, with his Argonauts,
sought Medea’s help in his quest for the golden fleece. Having succeeded in
his great adventure, Jason and Medea have settled in Corinth. Jason abandons
Medea to marry the daughter of Creon, the ruler of Corinth. Enraged, Medea
takes a terrible revenge on Jason and Creon.
The Reviews
This “…is the take-no-prisoners approach of Sally Groth, a ramrod-straight,
steely-eyed Medea. Groth is fully invested in her character. With her
perfect posture and firm jaw, she looks and acts the part of a king's daughter.”
Elaine Guregian of the Akron Beacon Journal
“I’ve seen “Medea” on the stage several times, and the Actors’ Summit
production is the most riveting production of “Medea” I’ve seen…. “ David
Ritchey, of the West Side Leader, in Akron. Dr. Ritchey continues “This
production has several things going for it. First, Jeffers’ adaptation and translation
makes the Greek tragedy accessible to the audience. Every plot point is
easily understood. Second, Neil Thackaberry (director) brings the story directly
to the audience. The members of the audience cannot look away or avoid what
is happening on the stage. “ he continues “….. The actors perform with a
clarity that makes the story easy to follow…..”.
Tony Brown of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes: “ Dark-eyed Sally Groth,
whose work in the area heretofore has tended toward sunnier roles, shimmers
with a motherly beauty as Medea, burning with an inner fire so volcanic it
could only emanate from a woman scorned. “ he continues: “ On a set that is
little more than a pair of benches and a double door, director Neil
Thackaberry creates 95 minutes of hell, a compilation of rash decisions by irrational
humans caught up in fates they brought upon themselves.”
Dick King, of Akron responded with “… it was an outstanding play, thanks
for much for doing it….and …Medea, Sally Groth…we saw her first in your
production of Romeo and Juliet from your beginning days…she was just tremendous…
thanks for doing it….”
