*PLAYERS GUILD*
*TO PRESENT WORLD PREMIERE*
*OF RUMPELSTILTSKIN*
The Players Guild Theatre will present the world premiere of the popular
Grimm's fairy tale, *Rumpelstiltskin* adapted by Tom Bryant, opening Friday,
November 9 for a run of 8 performances through November 18.
First published in the 1800's by the Brothers Grimm, *Rumpelstiltskin* is
one of hundreds of fairy tales including Cinderella written by the German
scribes. Canton native Tom Bryant has adapted the two page fable into a
full length two act play. The story revolves around a poor fisherman and
his daughter, and a King's journey to discover true love. The journey
becomes one of magic when the daughter is asked to spin straw into gold. With
the help of a mysterious creature named Rumpelstiltskin, she is soon
bargaining for more than just gold.
"I picked *Rumpelstiltskin *because it is a story that is surprisingly not
done very often," explains playwright Bryant. "I wanted to write a play
that people could be familiar with, but perhaps may have forgotten over
time. It is my goal to have the script published with Samuel French perhaps
staging it at one or two additional theatres in Northeast Ohio. "
*Rumpelstiltskin* will be directed by Don Irven of Cleveland who is new to
the Players Guild. The world premiere script will be presented as a staged
reading with movement. "The challenges of work shopping any new script
include the time frame and the ability to fine tune the script as we work
through it," explains Irven. "By staging the show as a reading we give the
cast and the playwright the flexibility to shape this exciting script. We
have added a lot of choreography, movement and magic as well to heighten the
visual moments in the show. Another exciting addition to our production
will be to include classical music to underscore select scenes."
The ensemble cast of eight includes Dana E. Cole, Alan D. Dawson, and Brad
Graef of Canton; Hannah Hovan, Steve Mossor, and Jordyn Litman of North
Canton; Rachel Palmer of Massillon; and Jeanne DeWeese of Beach City.
Devon Shriver of Cleveland is the choreographer. The set and lights are
being designed by Craig Betz and the costumes* *by Susie Smith. Annette
Sundheimer is the assistant director and the stage manager is Amanda
Conversino.
Performances are scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2:00
p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Adult tickets are $ 15.00 and tickets under
the age of 17 are $ 12.00. For information on group or senior discounts
