MACHINAL

By Sophie Treadwell

Directed by Holly Holsinger

at Cleveland State University

A 1928 Broadway hit, Machinal traces the dark, downward spiral of a young
woman trapped by the machine of a patriarchal society. Her life is dictated
by the rituals of modern life, leading her into mindless labor, loveless
marriage, and unwanted motherhood.

Inspired by her long time interest in women accused of murder, playwright
Sophie Treadwell loosely bases Machinal on the sensational 1927 murder trial
of Ruth Snyder, who became the first woman to die in the electric chair.
Treadwell uses this scenario as a springboard for her own speculations about
what circumstances might drive a seemingly harmless stenographer to commit
murder. Treadwell describes her play as "the story of a woman... any woman.
ready, eager for life, for love...but deadened, squeezed, crushed by the
machinelike quality of the life surrounding."

In 1928, the play was lauded by the New York Times as a play that "in a
hundred years should still be vital and vivid." A powerful expressionistic
drama, Machinal is a provocative look at an increasingly impersonal
world-perhaps more vital now than ever.
