Subject: [NEohioPAL] Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone Comes to
 Cleveland Play House

Hershey Felder as George Gershwin Alone Comes to Cleveland Play House Hershey Felder as GEORGE GERSHWIN ALONE
The Award Winning International Production Comes to The Cleveland Play House
CLEVELAND (November 26, 2007) – George Gershwin, one of America’s greatest and most beloved composers who is credited with making a “lady out of jazz,” will return to the stage in the form of Hershey Felder as GEORGE GERSHWIN ALONE at The Cleveland Play House. George Gershwin Alone will begin preview performances on Tuesday, January 15 and will be performed in the Drury Theatre through February 3, 2008.
Hershey Felder, actor, pianist, playwright and composer, has produced and staged George Gershwin Alone from Los Angeles to South Korea with stops on Broadway and in London’s West End having given some three thousand performances in major centres across the globe. George Gershwin Alone is directed by Joel Zwick, director of the film phenomenon My Big Fat Greek Wedding, among other box office hits.
George Gershwin Alone is a one-man “imagination with music” production about the life and music of the composer who brought the world such works as “A Rhapsody in Blue,” “An American in Paris” and Porgy and Bess. The award-winning and critically-acclaimed George Gershwin Alone presents what an evening may have been like in the presence of the great composer. This work represents the third movement of a trilogy about composers entitled “The Composer Sonata,” with each of the first two movements featuring the composer Ludwig van Beethoven, in Beethoven, As I Knew Him and Fryderyk Chopin in Monsieur Chopin.
The Los Angeles Stage Alliance recently awarded Hershey Felder with the 2007 Ovation Award for best actor and George Gershwin Alone for best musical, best lighting design and best sound design.
  ABOUT GEORGE GERSHWIN ALONE
To create this work, the Gershwin family gave Hershey Felder unfettered access to the artist’s manuscripts, personal and professional papers and recordings. Mr. Felder conducted further research with Gershwin family members, biographers, friends and associates and at the Library of Congress, which houses the entire George and Ira Gershwin family archives as well as the composer’s Steinway piano. Felder also studied Gershwin’s radio show recordings to capture his vocal approach to speech and song in the “jazz age.”
George Gershwin was born in 1898 to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents in Brooklyn, New York. Together, he and his brother, Ira, wrote standards such as “The Man I Love,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “I Got Rhythm,” “S’Wonderful” and “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” His groundbreaking opera, “Porgy and Bess,” is now considered an American classic. All told, George Gershwin wrote more than one thousand songs for the stage and screen as well as works for the opera house and the symphony orchestra. In 1937, at the age of 38, Gershwin died of an undiagnosed brain tumor, never knowing how famous and beloved he and his work would become.

See you there!

===============
Pianist Halida Dinova has performed and recorded with Europe's finest orchestras.
A champion of rare and interesting twentieth-century repertoire from her native Russia and America, she is known for her virtuosity and exquisite interpretations. In 2003 CHANDOS released her recording of Ernest Bloch's Piano Concertos with the St. Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Alexander Tchernoushenko. Critics from GRAMOPHONE and AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE called it the best recording yet of those works.
In 2004 CANTIUS CLASSICS released her recording of Brahms's Second Piano Concerto with the St. Petersburg Academic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra under Gustavo Plis-Sterenberg. This recording was rated five stars on Amazon.com and was described by critics as "a bold, deeply poetic reading, marked by a technical command that many pianists couldn't muster..." "Her sheer poetry, her passion, and above all, her incredible tone would do credit to any pianist of any stage of musical insight..."
In November of 2002, with the symphony orchestra of the State Capella in St. Petersburg, Russia, she premiered the concerto "Shadow of the Swan" which was written for her by American composer Dennis Eberhard. A CD of this performance was released in 2004 by NAXOS (American Classics series). The concerto was inspired by the memory of those who lost their lives in the Challenger Space Shuttle and Kursk submarine disasters. The premiere garnered international attention and has been made into a documentary film by Laura Paglin which won a prize at the Calgary International Film Festival in September 2005.
In summer of 2005 CANTIUS CLASSICS released her solo album "Masterpieces for Children by Bach, Debussy, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky." The CD was made in collaboration with the Chicago and Detroit Diocese of Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. The proceeds from the sales of this recording will benefit orphanages in Russia.
Her Scriabin album (released by DOREMI) has sold thousands of copies and received resounding acclaim:
"A Scriabinist destined to lead all others ... Dinova is indeed a great Scriabinist ... In the most breathtaking recital devoted to the composer I've heard in more than 30 years, she proves she has everything, at least where Scriabin is concerned ... a thorough identification with music's philosophy ... In this work (Scriabin's Tenth sonata) Dinova is entirely at home offering a visceral, larger -than-life account that, if not as diabolical as Horowitz's or as emotionally unsettling as Sofronitsky's, easily holds its own in comparison " AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE.
"The recital is both seductive and convincing... well worth your attention " FANFARE
Born in Kazan, Russia, Dinova studied with Natalia Fomina and Irina Dubinina at the Kazan Conservatory. After finishing her degree at the Conservatory Ms. Dinova was one of only a few pianists choosen to participate in a two year program called Aspirantura - the Russian equivalent of Doctor of Musical Arts program. She completed her Aspirant degree with the renowned pianist Anatol Ugorski at the Rimsky- Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg and was immediately invited to teach at the Kazan State Conservatory. At the end of her forth year of teaching, Ms. Dinova entered the Geza Anda competition which earned her a concert tour and a scholarship from the European Mozart Foundation. Soon after moving to United States she earned an Artist Diploma from the Cleveland Institute of Music and attended masterclasses of Paul Shenly, Rudolf Buchbinder, Anton Kuerti, Andre LaPlante, and Murray Perahia.
A prizewinner of several international competitions, Ms. Dinova has performed in North America, Russia, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, France., Italy, Turkey, and Argentina. She appeared on international festivals such as Orford ( Canada) and as a chamber musician in the Edinbourgh ( Scotland) International festival.
Recent plans include performances of the Prokofiev's Third piano concerto in Cuba and Argentina, and a newly launched series of solo recitals titled "Sic resplendit Gloria Mundi" which focuses on reviving rare gems of piano literature from different periods of musical history ( J.Dussek, A.Rubinstein, M.Reger, F.Poulenc among others) is now in progress. A Steinway Artist, Halida Dinova is also available for Master Classes, new music presentations and collaborations with instrumentalists and vocalists.
Ms. Dinova resides in Cleveland area with her husband and divides her time between performing, research on American piano concertos and teaching in Cuyahoga College. Her hobbies include horseback riding and whitewater rafting.

Did you go shopping the day after Thanksgiving? I did for the first time. Yes, there were long lines, and yes, there were good sales, but do you know the thing that stands out most in my mind? Every radio station played nothing but Christmas music. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, but it seemed a little much as I was still digesting the previous day's turkey overdose. And the music keeps coming!

There's good news. You can take a break from decking the halls and fa-la-la-ing. PNR Improv is having a show this Saturday. We hope to see you there.

P.S.~Good luck untangling the tree lights!

Come see PNR Improv this Saturday and enjoy an evening of PG-13, alcohol-free entertainment in the style of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?'
