Double Nickel Blues
A world premiere docu-drama with music and movement
Written and directed by Margaret Ford-Taylor

Blacks of African descent customarily chronicle their American journey
through music, movement and story telling. The late renowned playwright,
August Wilson, dubbed these expressions 'African-American cultural
artifacts.' In the tradition of Wilson, Double Nickel Blues is a work of
fiction based on the factual existence of dozens of Black businesses,
churches, social and civic organizations on Cleveland's east side during the
1940's. The intent is to capture the essence of the lives of the people who
owned them; their stories woven together with the music that consoled and
inspired them. Extensive and on-going research of the period, including over
100 interviews of seniors as well as photographs and film footage from
public and private collections, provide the foundation for the Double Nickel
Blues script. The Cleveland narrative is a microcosmic representation of
what was occurring throughout the nation.
