Great Lakes Theater Festival Goes Green
With Design For New Home At Hanna Theatre
The project is pursuing "silver" certification as part of the US Green Building Council's

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

CLEVELAND, OHIO - January 18, 2008 - Great Lakes Theater Festival's new home at the Hanna Theatre in Playhouse Square will preserve the environment as well as the architectural spirit of a great historic theater as part of its $19.2M Re-Imagine a Classic campaign.

The theater renovation project is currently registered with the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI). In addition, the Festival has made the commitment to apply for LEED certification of the interior fit-out of the new Hanna Theatre following construction. The project is currently pursuing a silver level certification.

The LEED rating system encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices by certifying projects that incorporate design and construction practices that significantly reduce the negative impact of buildings on their environment.

"Our mission as a classic theater company is deeply rooted in the principle of preservation," said Charles Fee, Great Lakes Theater Festival Producing Artistic Director. "Whether preserving the invaluable legacy of the classics or something as vital as our environment, we are committed to playing a role in positively impacting our world."

Positively impacting the health of the environment is the result of a sustained and cumulative commitment according to Monica Green, AIA, Principal, of Westlake Reed Leskosky, the architectural firm charged with the creation of the Hanna Theatre's new design. "It is not an enormous 'one single' effort that makes a project fantastic, but the attention to the 'one-hundred little' measures that the LEED Green Building Rating System brings into focus."

Great Lakes Theater Festival's Re-Imagine a Classic campaign received a strong affirmation for the environmentally conscious design of its new home at the Hanna Theatre from The George Gund Foundation - one of Northeast Ohio's largest foundations. In July of 2007, the foundation made a $750,000 grant for the Hanna renovation. GLTF's project was the first capital project awarded funding under the Foundation's new green building policy which requires that capital grants be awarded only to projects that seek LEED certification.

"We think the Hanna Theatre renovation is an exciting project that will not only insure Great Lakes Theatre Festival's future as a vibrant performing arts organization but also bring added vitality to downtown Cleveland," said Deena Epstein, a senior program officer at the foundation. "Their commitment to 'green' the project reflects the far-sighted thinking that has gone into the planning of this project."

Great Lakes Theater Festival plans to complete its new home at the Hanna Theatre in time for the opening of its 47th season in September 2008. The project is part of the Festival's Re-Imagine a Classic campaign - the fruit of a visionary partnership between Great Lakes Theater Festival and Playhouse Square. The first resident company of Playhouse Square, Great Lakes Theater Festival has called the Theater District home since 1982.

Great Lakes Theater Festival's Project Specifics & LEED Certification
To earn LEED certification, a project must satisfy all of the prerequisites and achieve a minimum number of points to attain a LEED certification rating level. LEED credit documentation occurs throughout the construction of the project and will be completed upon the project's conclusion. At that time, documentation is submitted to the USGBC for review and certification. The following sustainable design strategies are currently incorporated into the design for Great Lakes Theater Festival's new home at the Hanna Theatre and will contribute to LEED-CI certification:

Sustainable Sites/Building Selection

The Hanna Theatre project will...

§ Utilize an existing building located within an existing development density of 60,000 square foot/acre, within a two-story downtown structure that channels development to urban areas with existing infrastructure.

§ Make use of existing parking opportunities and the numerous public transportation options to the site offered by the new Euclid Corridor Transportation Project.

Energy and Atmosphere

The Hanna Theatre project will...

§ Eliminate the use of CFC-based refrigerants in new theatre's HVAC equipment
(chilled water system).

§ Increase levels of energy conservation through the use of programmable lighting controls that reduce power loads when lighting is not required.

§ Introduce Demand Control Ventilation (DCV) into areas within the theatre that are not regularly occupied through the installation of CO2 sensors.

Materials and Resources

The Hanna Theatre project will...

§ Designate areas for collection and storage of materials for recycling.

§ Solidify a long-term lease agreement and extend the life cycle of the existing building stock thereby reducing the environmental impact of constructing new buildings.

§ Manage construction waste throughout construction to redirect recyclable resources back to the manufacturing process. 92% (by wt.) of demolition debris will be diverted from land fill disposal.

§ Re-use existing building components and historic architectural features including balcony boxes, coffered ceiling, and gilded doors and transoms.

§ Re-use and retrofit existing plumbing fixtures with new water conserving controls.

§ Employ the use of construction materials created with recycling content: structural steel, metal doors and frames, insulation, carpet, ceiling tiles, etc.

§ Emphasize the selection and employment of construction materials manufactured within a 500 mile radius for use within the project.

Indoor Environmental Quality

The Hanna Theatre project will...

§ Create and implement an IAQ (indoor air quality) management plan during the construction process. (intensify housekeeping, protect HVAC system, control pollutant sources, sequence installation of materials to avoid contamination.)

§ Reduce "off-gassing" of construction finish materials by selecting and employing materials like low emitting paint, carpet, adhesives and sealants.

§ Create and implement a green housekeeping/cleaning program that utilizes cleaning supplies/solutions which do not adversely affect the air quality within the theatre.
