ABOUT DRYADS:

Dryads are female tree spirits in Greek mythology. In Greek drys
signifies 'oak,' from an Indo-European root *derew(o)- 'tree' or 'wood.'
Thus dryads are specifically the nymphs of oak trees, though the term
has come to be used for all tree nymphs in general. "Such deities are
very much overshadowed by the divine figures defined through poetry and
cult," Walter Burkert remarked of Greek nature deities (Burkert 1986,
p174). Normally considered to be very shy creatures, except around the
goddess Artemis who was known to be a friend to most nymphs

Dryads and hamadryads are two types of wood nymphs in Greek mythology.
These female nature spirits were thought to inhabit trees and forests,
and they were especially fond of oak trees.

Dryads were often depicted in myth and art accompanied - or being
pursued by - their male counterparts, the satyrs.

There are many stories of dryads in myth and legend. One famous dryad
was Eurydice, the beautiful but ill-fated wife of Orpheus. According to
the tale, Eurydice was killed by a snake when she tried to escape from
the unwelcome amorous advances of Aristaeus. The fact that a dryad such
as Eurydice could die demonstrates the idea that these nymphs were not
immortal. And indeed, the hamadryads were even more vulnerable, for it
was believed that their lives depended on the health and well-being of
the trees they inhabited. The myth of Erysichthon illustrates this point.

Ursula Rauh

Ursula reaches deep – touching the Earth goddess hidden within us all.
"My personal experience compels me to express the sacred feminine,
sensuality and strength of women." Messages of love and spirituality
permeate her work. Her goal is to awaken the human consciousness by
expressing the beauty of life to all who view her work.

Rebecca Urbanski

I am a self-taught artist, living, working and creating in Northeast
Ohio. I am inspired by the dark, empty windows of the surrounding cities
and suburbs, the glamorous film stars of the 20's, 30's and 40's, and
the Earth I live on.
My work is constantly evolving as I learn and experiment with new lines,
new materials and greater knowledge of the applications of such.

Bernadette Glorioso

www. bernadetteglorioso. com

Bernadette Glorioso has been gifted with a unique sense of color and
expression fused with a driving passion for understanding interpersonal
communication. Her art expresses an exploration, which is in itself is
her way of communicating with the viewer in an attempt to allow people
to open their minds to the wondrous, sometimes sardonic nature of humanity.
Bernadette's paintings deal with people's emotions and reactions to
life's complexities. As a viewer, you will gain a sense of how we
struggle to communicate as her images uncannily attach to your own
humanity. The emotional expressions and dramatic poses invoke you to
identify with the artist's observations of individual personalities and
communicate your own situational response, nearly on a subconscious level.
Bernadette resides and teaches art in Akron, Ohio. Her classes are
available in Highland Square and at the Akron Art Museum.

or more personal

I would like to bring a universal timeless quality to my paintings and
speak straight inside the head of the viewer, crossing the personal gaps
that seperate us and linking with the collective unconcious. Painting is
silently talking through your eyes, and talking to the future.

Krisztina Hajnalka

www.transcendentbird.com

I want to reopen our mind°¶s thirst for beauty and transcendence.
Through imagery and the intricate nature of my work, I want to spark the
holy fire that lies dormant in so many of us and to cast open the closed
doors of the heart. Beauty, truth and goodness are available to everyone
and can be found everywhere in our world, even amidst the horrors and
tragedies of today. We often fail to see that which is right next to us
and do not realize what is already inherent in our own being. I want my
art to point out the glorious nature of all that is around us and very
importantly, all the glory and pure joy that is alive within us as well

I received an extremely intense vision in February 2002 that completely
jolted my life out from under me. I saw an immense mandala of flames and
eyes, rotating in on itself, expanding through space and dimensions. I
became a vessel for its creation, hardly sleeping or eating until the
painting was complete. Because I had no idea what happened and why, I
researched and read everything I could get my hands on. The mandala had
come to heal me, to end my path of self-destruction, and to redirect my
energy towards a positive, integral, spiritual practice. Now, as I work
from the inspiration of my growing inner light, I am constantly
learning, discovering and searching for ways of conveying our different
levels of consciousness through my art. I depict my journey, referencing
archetypes, spiritual symbolism, my own meditation and vision imagery in
an effort to expand beyond myself and to touch the universal elements
that exist within all of us

An artist’s creation can be a manifestation of spirit. We all share in
this spirit when we are deeply moved by a work of art. We channel the
artist’s own divine experience, which grabs a hold of the universally
fundamental point in our human soul. To reach this is my ultimate goal
and should be one of the goals of art itself. In this way, art is a
portal through which the holy light of inspiration travels from artist
to viewer. It acts as a mediator between the spiritual realms and our
every day functions, tapping our subconscious with extraordinary
glimpses of what we are capable of. Art needs to give unselfishly to the
viewer opening up an appreciation for life with beauty, truth, goodness
and love. We live in a world that has denied an essential facet of the
human mind for far too long. To realize our true existence, not only as
individuals, but as mankind, we must reincorporate spirituality and
loving kindness into our lives and interconnect it with our sciences,
cultures and social systems.

The brilliance of our experience on this world is life itself. Every
human being, despite nationality, socio-political rank, sex, religious
orientation or lack thereof, has the potential to achieve Enlightenment.
We all have the ability to discover the expanding universe within
ourselves and to become one with the ultimate light of the Absolute. Art
is an essential vehicle for transcendence, both in describing this
potential and in illuminating the visions and possibilities of the third
eye. I want my work to reflect the beauty and wonder of life and
consciousness, and to inspire others with similar experiences to pursue
the ultimate unity through love and compassion on their own paths.

As my mental state declines and my idiosyncrysies won't let me operate
normally in the "real world", I open that door to my 4rth eye, tattoo
puppet world to play with my tribal community. I can't work in the
corporate-sponsored academic art world with it's esoteric club of
snobbery. I'm squeezing the last of my acrylics onto dumpster-dived
trash made into alters and treasures for the earth.

Spirits of the land, the Shawnee and Wood Bison bones coming back to
life to smash the institutions that rape and ruin. It's a holy war for
our subconscious aspirations armed with cartoons and classic icons and
lusty apocolyptus trees.

If these insane delusions defeat my mortal existence, I hope the
evidence I leave will show I was serving these just and sacred spirits
the best i could.
