GOLDA’S BALCONY
Extends Run
The critically acclaimed Golda’s Balcony, starring Dorothy Silver will have
two additional performances on Friday, April 18 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, April
20 at 8:00 PM. The play by William Gibson opened on March 28 to solid
praise from the critics. Tickets for the additional performances are on sale now.
The Play
On Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, October 6, 1973 the state of
Israel was attacked by the armed forces of Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. The
prime minister of the twenty five year old nation of Israel was a 75 year
old grandmother, Golda Meir.
Born in 1898 in Kiev Russia, Golda Mabovich, emigrated with her parents to
Milwaukee, Wisconsin when she was five years old. When she finished grade
school, her parents saw no need for her to continue her education, so she ran
away to live with her sister in Colorado. At the age of 16, finding her sister
as “bossy” as her mother, she moved out, got a job, and rented a room. In
Colorado she met Morris Meyerson whom she married several years later.
In 1921, Golda and Morris emigrated to Palestine and joined a kibbutz.
Golda, who had always been politically active, worked for the labor party and
eventually became a functionary within the Jewish Agency.
On the eve of the establishment of the State of Israel, Golda was sent on an
undercover mission to negotiate peace with King Abdullah of Jordan. Her
mission failed.
Golda Meir (David Ben-Gurion changed her name from Meyerson to Meir to make
it sound more Hebrew) served the new state in a number of capacities:
fundraiser, ambassador to Moscow, Minister of Labor, and Foreign Minister.
The central focus of the play is the decision Golda faced in the darkest
days the Yom Kippur war, when the imminent destruction of the State of Israel
caused her to consider using Israel’s nuclear weapons.
