Physical Practice / a technique and partnering workshop:

The heart of this advanced contemporary technique and partnering workshop is a holistic organization of the dancer as a body, human and artist. The intellectual goal is to cultivate smart, open minded, unique artists capable of engaging in artistic dialogue. The physical goal is to foster complete freedom of expression, awareness/safety and an innate understanding of one’s own body. The bones of this workshop use Passive Sequencing to promote maximum joint range of motion, Contact Improvisation to articulate the infinite spiral of the spine and to reinforce the advantages of rebounding off the floor in relation to gravity, and concepts of directional energy to understand how tension, counter tension, momentum and tork can be used to their fullest advantage. We will practice the fine balance of having an inner dialogue with the “biology” while simultaneously maintaining and extended, external awareness of space, time, musicality and interplay with others. We will work to
contextualize the political, personal and artistic meaning behind why we move, in order to find a deeper resonance when we move.

KT Niehoff is from Seattle, Washington and is currently a visiting guest artist at Oberlin College. She is a 2001 Artist Trust Fellow and a 2006 Choreographic Fellow at the Maggie Allessee National Center for Choreography at Florida State University. She holds a BFA from New York University.

In the past five years she has been developing a deep connection to the Cleveland area, having twice before been an artist in residence at Oberlin, most recently in research and development with her company's most recent work, INHABIT, a social art feast. She has also had the priveledge of setting two original works on David Shimotakahara's company, Groundworks, as well as enjoying a season with her own company, Lingo, this past March at Cleveland Public Theater.

Since 1998, the major platform for her work has been with her company of collaborating artists, Lingo, which has been presented internationally in Canada, Japan, Ecuador and Cuba and nationally by venues including On the Boards in Seattle, Joyce SoHo in NYC, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival Inside/Out, SUSHI performance gallery in San Diego, and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, among others. The company’s artistic integrity has been recognized by such institutions as The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Dance Project, The National Performance Network, Meet the Composer and Arts International. As of late, her curiosities surround shifting the entry point of how the public interfaces with dance. She is interested in environments outside the limitations of proscenium-based performance, such as art “events” including food, drink, gathering and dancing, museum installations, film work and one on one encounters in urban, public settings.

As a teacher, Niehoff has taught contemporary technique and composition world wide at institutions including The SNDO (Amsterdam), Estudio 3 (Madrid), The Hong Kong Academy of the Performing Arts, Cornish College of the Arts (Seattle) and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Niehoff was the co-founder and director of Velocity Dance Center, from 1996-2006, which has since grown to be the epicenter of Seattle’s professional dance community.
