Hudson Players Present Critic Favorite 'Spinning into Butter' Now Through
May 18

Rebecca Gilman's though provoking play "Spinning into Butter," which
examines racial tensions on a white rural college campus, is currently being
presented by the Hudson Players to enthusiastic audience reaction. There's
been a lot of discussion about new shows and current topics and this is a
great example of why live theater is still the best art form. Remaining
performances are May 9, 10, 16 & 17 at the Barlow Community Center on Oviatt
Street in Hudson. Performances begin at 8 p.m. and reservations can be made
by calling 330-655-8522 or by purchasing tickets at the door on show nights.
Tickets are $12, with group, senior and student discounts available. "It's
excellent" was a typical audience reaction.

Called "a fascinating exposition of American culture's psychoses about race"
by the Sydney Morning Herald, 'Spinning into Butter' was first produced in
1999 at Chicago's Goodman Theater. Using the old and politically incorrect
story of "Little Black Sambo" as a metaphor, Gilman's characters are forced
to examine their attitudes and behavior when one of the few African-American
students on campus finds a hate note tacked to the door of his room. As in
the children's story, the campus "tigers" soon begin to chase one another
furiously around the "tree" until they turn themselves into an intellectual
and emotional pool of melted butter. The Chicago Tribune called 'Spinning
Into Butter' "an extraordinarily fresh, eloquent and candid new play."

Directed by Bob McCoy, the cast includes Claudia Lillibridge as Sarah, Doug
Lillibridge as Ross, Chris White as Dean Kenney, Adam Young as Dean Strauss,
Jerry Schaber as Meyers, Adam Leventhal as Patrick and Basel (Bozz) Hage as
Greg.

'Spinning Into Butter' has been made into a major motion picture starring
Sarah Jessica Parker and Beau Bridges with a release date still to be set.

A native of Trussville, Ala., Gilman studied at Middlebury College in
Vermont before attending Birmingham Central College in Alabama and the
University of Iowa's MFA program in playwriting. The Hudson Players are one
of Northeast Ohio's longest running community theater groups. They have
presented award-winning theater for 63 seasons and are members of the
American Association of Community Theatre and the Ohio Community Theatre
Association.
